Trailer Rust

Hi guys,

bought our first boat (4.5m tinnie) last yr and the trailer seemed to be OK.

But it now appears that there was a rust issue, which was painted over with silver paint at time of purchase.

I want to get rid of it and assume I will need to use an "angle grinder" to cut it back.

Do I use angle grinder, and would I use a wire brush attachment, or a disc to strip back the metal?

Once that is done, how would I treat the meatl? ie: what anti rust treatments and paint etc?

I'm not a traddie so I don't know a lot about these type of things, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

G'day Christian,

Hit it with the angle grinder if it is really bad, if not, use a good stiff wire brush.

Remove all flaking rusty metal.

Coat it with Killrust Rust Converter

Then coat with 2 coats of Silver Zinc. (Hard to find, but it is the best coating available for this purpose ... normal cold galvanising isnt anywhere near as good as this stuff)

If you like, prep the trailer, then give me a call ... I have the rust converter and the Silver Zinc in stock, it wont take long to do.

Hi Pete...Have you ever heard of a paint called `wasser`....recieved a tin from a mate here last month....it is full of Zinc....4l tin weighs about 20 bloody kg...they tell me it is a great product....but i think it is not available to the public...

Well maybe you could contribute something usefull to the thread and explain what it is and if its a) relevant to the issue and b) how and where it is obtained from and used.

Gee Kerry,
If you remember that you must be about as old as me.

Silverfrost=silver paint from around 1955-60 approx. Looked pretty but not near as effective as modern zinc paints.

Seabug, What something along the lines of modern day "red lead" geez can't even get proper linseed oil these days let alone proper "red lead" Like what's going to be next

Silver frost had some unique abilities and if you've got any I'll find a home for it

Agree on that,Boiled Linseed Oil and Redlead.
Lots of uses on the farm.

Boiled Linseed is easy to get. Just have to look in the right places.
Silver zinc is brilliant.

What's the unique abilities of silver frost??
I'd love to know.

talking of things in the past era, what about white lead. It had the consisdency of a paste and put on exposed threads and it set to a semi hard compound that could be removed with a sraper and wire brush leaving the thread like new
