    Help settle an argument

    OK,
Everyone knows the good ol moses perch/ finger mark bream.

I always throw them back. But a friend say no keep them when everything else is slow they have good meat and taste good. They then said there was no size limit for them either.
I thought the size limit was 25cm.

So my question is in QLD is there a size limit on the ol moses perch????

I've googled them but i cannot find a size limit anywhere.

Please point me in the right direction

    Neil

    Re: Help settle an argument

Before the coral fin fish laws came in they were listed on their own as Moses Perch with a 25cm size limit but when the new laws were introduced they were just added to the long list of tropical snappers and sea perches with the fixed size of 25cm so a lot of people didn't get confused by the long list of fish in the Lutjanus family.

The are fantastic eating. I get them on the plastics up at Noosa and in teh Pumicestone Passage all the time. The problem is that I have never managed one over about 28cm - perhaps that is because I fish land based and the big ones are out on the reefs.

G'day mate, be careful which is which.
The moses perch is lutjanus russelli and is subject to regulations
    http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishguide/1586.html

The fingermark is lutjanus johnii (large scaled sea perch) and is NOT considered as a coral reef fish

    Re: Help settle an argument

I always thought that they were the same fish except the ones out on the reefs were big suckers,Ive never caught the big ones so I can't comment on any differences. The first link above doesn't go anywhere and the last one refers to them as the same species but says they only grow to 2 kgs or 53cm. I could be wrong but I thought I had seen bigger in reports and mags etc.
Now I'm confused........................ can anyone shed some light as I won't sleep....ta

First of all fingermark are a different fish to moses perch.

    Moses perch 25cm
    Finger mark 35cm

    Re: Help settle an argument

definitely separate fish, grants lists 3 species commonly called moses:- russelli is the truemoses;fulviflamma- black spot &monostigma- one spot with the first two growing to 50cm and the last 58cm. then there's lutjanus johni 60cm ive always (probably incorrectly)refered to the last as a fingermark simply cause ive caught most of the lujanus species and found an occasional dot (sometimes faint) on quite a few that aren't supposed to have one
