hey mate, i cant see how you can do it, paint would crack and fall off and dye/stain would not take. The only way i can see around it is to use a tappered leader
(Airflo and Rio make some good ones) they come in different lengths from 3m to 6m
add onto that your tippet. your fluro yellow line will now be 6m+ away from the fly.
another bonus with the tappered leaders is you can carry them in a pouch with a few different densities so you can turn your floater into a intermediate in a few seconds, hope this helps...

can you give us any more details mate, i was boring 2000+ people about it for well over a year when i brought the contents of a fly fishing store that closed down in ireland (came with 30+ Rio and Teeny flylines in crap colours) the general consenses was that the top layer of the fly line was made with a slick surface to aid in shooting amongst other things, it does get scum on it but it cleans off easily, im just currious what product there is so i can tell some friends who are in the same situation as nuggstar, Cheers...

Re: changing the colour of my fly line

    Hi Salmon,
If I hadn't seen it done I would have had the same school of thought about the protective coating it makes sense . however I know of a couple of guys who have done it before heading over to NZ targeting ferals , I am not sure of the details on how to do it but I beleive it involves hot water and a specific type of dye , if you are real keen on changing the colour of your line you might want to give Gavin Platz a call here is a link to his site you can contact him there, www.tienfly.com .
I was in his shop when he was talking to another mate about it and I beleive it was successful although I cannot be sure of how long the colour stays in . Alternativly like I mentioned in my previous post the TV series "a river somewere" shows Tom Gleisner changing the colour of his line in NZ from a light green to a dark green so that his line blends into the trees in the landscape while the line is in the air to reduce the contrast .
Also I have noticed that some of my flyline tend to take on the colour of the backing when they have been left on the reel for a while ,I guess a good example of this would be my SA bonefish line which is a floating line , this line has taken on the colour of my yellow XTS backing when I left it on the reel for a weeks fishing on Christmas Island ,normaly I take the line of the reel when I finish fishing so this doesn't normaly happen. This line being a tropical floating line that I also dressed reguarly to keep it floating better should have one of the best coatings available and it still took on colour.
so I guess its possible I have never intetionaly had to do it
    hope this helps you guys

    Nuggstar,

I use Fluro yellow lines on my #10 and #8 with no probs what so ever, leader I use is only a couple of metres long and have caught plenty of Flatties, Barra, Tuna,Bream & Jack on this set up.

    Regards,

    The Bomber
