Looks like a variety of triggerfish. He would look nice in an aquarium.
cheers scott
It's definately a surgeonfish.
Not entirely sure of the exact species but would guess on Ornate surgeonfish - Acanthurus dussumieri
The 'scalpel' just in front of tail is the telling feature for surgeons.
Cheers.
I believe it is a Ring- Tailed Surgeonfish, Acanthurus xanthopterus, that is after consulting Grants Fishes of Australia. Grows to 630mm. not often caught by line fisherman, easy target for spear fisherman, has a strong weedy taste which makes it almost inedible.
Cheers,
Obi_Wan.
oops...might have too invest in a fish id guide.
Eye-Stripe Surgeon fish the eye ball mark on the tail and the dorsal has a blue line
It says in the book to not eat
"light gear big fish big fun"
Is that checkered band around his sleeve an indicator of his occupation?
Cheers all, thanks for the help on ID. Fish was released immediatly after the photo. Looked to good to eat...
bushbeachboy - No, he's not a copper.
