Mud Island Sun (22th April)

We headed out to Mud this morning at 4.30 am, leaving Colmslie Ramp. Tried the usual spot without any luck, started to head to another mark when noticed a couple of decent size fish in the structure below, trolled the area till 11am for 6 parrot & two sweetlip, threw back a couple of smaller parrot, sweetlip & squire as well as a bull shark. Lost a couple of big fish to the reefs, but was one of the calmest days i have seen. Had my first go at plastics, still need some more practice, but managed to score a 33 cm squire which was released (Thanks Foggy!!).

Ok.... Can I have a quick fish ID lesson.

What are the fish on the esky? I thought the bigger ones were Parrot fish, but were then told they were Tuskies????? Caught a 48cm one of what ever they are and dropped it back in as didnt know what the hell it was.....

its a debatable issue i say call them wat u want there is a diffrence but people say they cought a venus tuskfish others say they cought a parrot fish...go figure

It definately did not have the fused beak like a traditional parrot fish, it more had canine incisors top and bottom. But its exactly the same fish thats on the esky in the previous photo...

According to the DPI site they are Grass tuskfish.

Yea it was definately one of them... Next question is, should I hae thrown it back or thrown it in the fry pan?

Nice haul you got there.Tuskies have the canines and parrot have the 2 big beak like teeth.I don't know if you can eat a true parrot as I believe the carry cigatera due to the eating of coral.No question about the edibility of the tuskies though.When I worked on a charter boat we often got the Venus tuskfish which is a lot pinker and was often referred to as a parrot.Cheers.

Grants guide calls them blue tuskies, blue teeth and blue bones left after eating all the tasty meat.
