Wello at night Placcie vs bait

The young fella had been bugging me to take him fishing - so packed up the boat - the intention was to burley up and use baits but I threw the placcie rods in... just in case.

Didnt hit the water till after 9pm, and tried to find Georges gutter in the dark without my GPS - couldnt find it - bugger!! so off to Wello - didnt get there till well after 10pm started burleying and out go the Mullay fillets along with a live mullet in the 6 inch range oh and throw out a placcie - just in case.

Within a couple of minutes the placcie rod goes off and a 38cm squire hits the boat - at this stage I thought it was going to be on - so I kept him live just in case I wanted to throw it back.... sit back and wait for the bait to go off.... nothing so out goes the placcie rod again 5 mins later and its bent over groaning and a squire - slightly bigger at 40cm hits the deck.

Finally some action on the bait - the rod with the double hooks pulls up a double header of twin baby squire all of 15cms long - back they go and rebait. The gang rig goes off and a small gold spot cod comes up and goes back in to grow another day - the double hook rig goes off and this time theres about 2 ft of slimy moray eel tangling itself up the line - wrapped up almost 3ft of line... as I'm wondering how to get it off the placcie rod goes off big time, yeh ok... it went zzzzzzzz (etc) anyway the pressure was so hard I couldnt get the rod out of the rod holder - finally get it out and the thing keeps going... and going and going... couldnt turn its head - finally after about 60 metres of line gone, it finds the reef and ping.... rubbed off... I get about two foot of raspy leader back - I think the good folk sleeping at wello point could hear the cursing!!!

A short while later and I can hear something chopping on the surface - so I cast the placcie towards where the noise was coming from - not knowing how far away it was... twitch twitch BANG on again this one gave me a short tussle and actually pulled some drag... resulting in a nice little squire around 50cm (probably 49.5cms) - but close enough.

After that it went quiet - tried drifting a bunch of different spots for nothing - the young fella didnt make it to see any of the action - he went to sleep before the first bait hit the water... now I'll have to do it all over again next week - Bugger!!

Oh the final score: Fantastic Plastic; 3 keepers - burley and bait; ZIP!!!

Sorry about the pic - its late (3am)

    Cheers,

    Adam

    Good stuff Adam,

I guess you proved a lot of things, and I want to catch up for a chin wag re: fishing plastics at night and exactly how you got these 3 suckers. At anchor? CAsting weight? CAst up current as normal or straight down the burley trail behind the boat?

The other thing you proved is your dedication the bring Ausfish forum a good story, even at 3.00am in the morning!!

Nice work Adam, I take it you were using the 5" jerk bait gulps?
Pity about the big fella getting away but that only gets you more fired up for the next trip.
One of my mates was fishing plastics at Wello yesterday and he nearly got spooled before the 2/0 heavy wire hook opened up.
Must have been a snodger fish.
Mate you will have to get out there a bit earlier in the night so your son can get in on the action.
I would imagine the gulps to fish aswell as bait during the dark nights.
Not so sure about the soft plastic baits with no scent.
I have used the zooms at night under a full moon and caught squire up to 62cms but had no luck on the new moon in darkness.
What colours did you use last night?
    Cheers Brent

Re: Wello at night Placcie vs bait

    Thanks guys.

Brian.. the burley trail was a big disappointment - bought in the bream and the eels - and a few small sandies which just mauled my good flesh baits - the sounder was showing plenty of fish - but nothing that wanted to chew the livies... damn pickers! So yeh at anchor for a couple of hours placcie technique: cast upstream - very lightly weighted (and I have a new technique... pinch weight - its great) and let it drift down.

Brent: yep those 5 inch gulp jerk shads are the go - I like something that glows a bit when you stick a light on it like nuc chick and pepper neon. I just picked up some 3inch swimming mullets that look like they should be good for the night sorties too.

Chief: thats a funny story - mainly cause thats about what happened - after the action was over and I wanted to head home - he's all bright eyed and wanted to have a fish - made for a late session.

    Cheers,

    Adam
