    Free Placcie Rod

Took some inspiration from some of the other lads from Ausfish and got up far too early to head off to Mud. Still pitch black upon arrival and had trouble finding any shows on the sounder. Ended up almost circumnavigating the island before finally landing an undersized squire and getting bust up by another model. I couldn't believe how slow the fishing was. Not too sure what was going on but was doing it tough. Headed off to find another spot and came across a nice stretch of water. Tried flicking 4 inch stick baits and was rewarded straight away with a nice sweet lip. Kept drifting the same area and on each drift kept picking up fish which were set free after popping a tag in them.

This is where your free rod comes into it. I was trying some single tail grubs which were working surprisingly well and decided to leave one rod in the holder with the grub bouncing on the bottom while casting the flick bait on the other rod. I cast out the flick bait put it in the holder and then cast out the grub. Just as I've cast the grub and flicked the bail arm over the other rod gets smashed. I pick it up and hook in placing the other rod at my feet. It would have taken all of two seconds when I hear a splash behind me. I turned around to see the other rod plowing through the water like its hooked up to a submarine. Nothing I could do except land the fish I was playing and wave good bye to my old faithful placcie rod. On the bright side the fish I had on was a bit over 40cm so I kept him for tea. Not too dissapointed as it was my old rod and quite a funny story. Sure am glad it wasn't my new rod though!

Ended up after a very slow start tagging 9 fish from 30 - 37cm, 1 bust off, 1 lost rod and kept the 40cm model as well as a big flounder. So if anyone hooks into a submarine with a placcie rod still attached, it's yours!!!(Light whippy 5 10' rod with 2000 size reel, its got grey braid backing and yellow fluro top shot line, 4 inch yellow storm rattle grub in the submarines mouth) . Ha Ha that will teach me for taking a bananna with me! Had a ball anyway, good to hear the ZZZZZZZZ again. Should keep me going until next week. All the best, c u on the water.

Thats a pretty funny story!! I'm glad you can laugh about it. I always think to myself that something like that could happen.... being a veteran of 4 lost rods myself - these days its rod holders or hands - nothing in between.

    Thanks for sharing!!
