    Queenfish help Please!

    Hi fellow Ausfishers,

Just wanted some tips on catching queenfish,
decided to target a great fighting fish and also had a previous fight with one,
which was great to experience but unfortunately spat the lure in mid air.
just wanted some general info on lures etc which works best for them.

    cheers james

    hey mate..
dont really target them but have caught a few at caloundra...
one was caught on a rather large live winter whiting but id guess all live baits would work..
the other on a metal... those raiders would be a great metal to start with. flick them out and retrieve with varying speeds to see what works best. id say a good starting size would be the 20-25g ones but i reckon the larger the size the more likely ull increase the quality in size of the fish!! however that means les of them

Never targeted them myself, but as far as metals go, you cant beat the Spanyid Maniacs (why are they so hard to find?) They have a nice fluttering action, better than any other i'v used.

    Hi Mate,

Have caught some seriously huge queenies up North but have caught some nice ones in the Noosa river...The ones I have caught in the river here have all been on poppers and fast retrieved plastics.

    Cheers

if the lures ar not working, queenies love live prawns and live mullet, herring and whiting as live 2 fish said

Mostly well worked surface poppers, big bloops will get them going. MaxG.

    Re: Queenfish help Please!

I used to have a spot where on an outgoing tide the queenies would hang in ambush. Anything that moved got nailed. That was until the dredgers destroyed everything.

When trolling offshore, the usual Halco, Rapala, Storm Deep Diver lures trolled at 8 to 10 km/h did the trick for us. Tuna Feathers also got hit bigtime. (Purple and black on clear days, red and white on dark days???? No idea why but it seems to work for us.)
Then again, anything that moved got nailed in a feeding frenzy.

A mate of mine nowadays uses the Berkley Gulp type of plastics on very light tackle fishing from the beach very close to a dropoff. He gets spooled on a regular basis, but that is the idea he reckons.

They do tend to jump a lot, and any play in the line increases the chances of the fish spitting the dummy it was sucking on.

    Good luck

Slider lures, Bombers and livies or trolled dead baits (on a quality 3x4/0) would be the way to go.

You usually pick up queen fish when targeting trevally I find. I nailed a 16kg queen fish up north on a gold bomber

But I find I get most with surface poppers. Try using a slightly smaller popper than usual and you may pick up a few more.

My bother and I have got some good ones up here on live whiting before they do seem to like em.

    Re: Queenfish help Please!

We get them on any popper when we fish the cones at Airlie. We also get them on a blue (don't know it's name off hand) cheap and nasty lure from kmart. Great lure which worked a treat last week end off Batemans Bay.

I use the white with red head Halco laserpro 2.5m plus never seems to miss and you always catch other specis with that lure.
