Thumbs up Just purchased 6hp Merc - maintenance and carby upgrade question

    Afternoon Team,
I have just picked up a 2003 Mercury 6hp , with the intention of also picking up a v-nose punt to complete the car-topper setup.

    My questions are as follows:
    1 - Maintenance
The motor has been sitting in a shed for a while. My initial thoughts are new spark plugs and leg oil. Apparently it has had minimal use, so I was not contemplating changing the impellor.

Is this enough? It runs sweet and pumps heaps of water out of the tell-tale.

    2 - Carby Upgrade
I have heard a lot about upgrading the carby to help the little 6hp get along a bit better? Something about changing over the carby with one from an 8hp?

Is this correct or am I on the wrong track?

On a side note - if anyone has an old v-nose or std punt laying around drop me a line.

    Your informaed comments are apppreciated.

    Cheers.

    Ed.

Red Nut i would be changeing the impellor as well if it has been sitting in a shed awhile .If you wanted an 8 horse why not buy one instead of a 6. My experiences with changing carbies is fuel economy is shocking and not much gain.Maybe merc 6 and 8 this is the only change i have no experience with mercs
    Stuie
IF IT CAN'T EAT A WHOLE PILLY I DON'T WANT IT

this upgrade thing pops up all the time, all you will achieve is a poor running, bad performing motor, there is more to a different motor than just the carby or the jets, it may share a similar power head/block but it stops there (usually) manufacturers would be fried alive if they charged (say) $500 or more for the next HP up if all the difference was a different jet in the carby (at manufacture probably about 20 cents)

    G'day

    I asked this question regarding a 9.9 and a 15merc 2000 model, 2stroke.

I am wanting to upgrade, have spoken to about 1/2 dozen different mechanics and have checked all part numbers and everything else possible.

For this particular setuop, I will need to change the carburettor (bigger throat) and also the megaphone (tuned further). I will also need to advance the timing by 1 degree.

I do believe the 6 and 8 are the same, best off ringing the mechanic and cross referencing the parts.

Be careful of the reeds aswell, in my case, they are the same.

The only difference is the carby bigger throat and jet size

A new one 8 hp cost me $160 plus $35 fitted and tuned

The difference 10 foot tinnie 12 knots to 17knots.
