    Hi DoubleXL;

I've always measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail; now that you mention it I am a bit concerned by your question though; will have to double check it - expensive mistake if I am wrong.

You are right too, DPI FishWeb is down currently....
    Regards,

    G'day

I believe it is from nose to tip of tail,

If it was to the fork, what happens to those fish with a convex tail like cod?

from the the nose to the longest you can leggaly make the tail go as told to me by dpi when i asked but allow for a bit of shrinkage after death i always allow half a cm

In queensland it is from the nose to the tip of the tail ,I believe down south it is to the fork. If in doubt I always go without, what you put back today you may catch "three fold "next year.
    Cheers

Measure from tip of the nose to the tip of the tail, with the tail in a natural position not raked back to give a little more length.

Re: The Proper Way To Measure Fish

Last time I went out fisheries were doing a size survey at the ramp. They measured my catch from nose to the tip of the tail...not the centre. One of my catch was 1/2 cm under....WHAT THE!! we measured it on my sticker and it was legal. So I now have a new rule....add at least 2-3cm to be safe.

Yep, I think the BilgeBoy and Robersl have the right idea to be on the safe side.

Add a cm or so onto your minimum for any given species; BilgeBoy, what did fisheries do when you told them your fish was legal and proved it on your sticker and what did they use to measure?

I always carry a cheap $1.00 tape measure from KMart on me - I haven't had to use it yet as I am sure that I have been cursed somewhere in the last 6 months odd which justifies my run of luck lately

    Synful

THANKFULLY, these guys were just surveying!! I joked at the time that they were just wearing Fisheries shirts to find out where all the good spots were...they also wanted to know where I caught my feed. I LIED!!!!

I asked what would have been the ruling if they had different caps on that day...and they said that it was a borderline one...would have depended on the mood of the bloke on the day. He did say that technically....IT WAS UNDER!!

That's one close call too many for me. So my stickers are a bit like the Brag mat I guess....it's just a guide. He did say that he would recommend me buying an accurate measure with a flat at one end. This way you can be sure the fish is hard up against the zero!! I do notice that a lot of brag mats have this so I guess the word to highlight here is accurate.

Anyway, like I said, I now add at least 2 CM to be on the safe side!! Good for the stock levels anyway.

    hi doublexl

my opinion is if you goto measure the fish may as well throw it back . honestly the size of legal fish you dont get much off them anyway

    cheers
