    Re: Fuel Questions

Thanks GUTS - Now I understand. Do you think the tip of the fuel dispensor would be able (or is shaped) to fit inside a bent pipe (at about 135degrees i.e. Y-piece)?

Regardig - filter - Wording is not clear. Which brand is worth (or better) for the $130 and which brand (cheaper brand) for the $90?

Re: your 85L plastic tank that is unbaffled - Which brand is this so I know what not to get? What plastic tanks do have baffles in them? What does "free surface" when partially filled mean? And, how is this very detrimental to lateral stability of what?

    Re: Fuel Questions

Splash yeah the Racor the whole unit fuel water seperator all the brass fittings, drain valve see through plastic tank Etc comes to about 130 bucks.

But when it's time to replace the filter that alone is around 90 bucks. Almost worth buying the whole unit again.

But there is another one around from Super cheap looks okay whole unit 70 bucks but the filters only around 12 bucks.

So I would probably go that way if some one could tell me if there any good.

Yeah would need to try out the Y' piece with the bowser first to see if the nozzle would fit inside each pipe. Guessing but I suspect it would just fit.

    Re: Fuel Questions

    BTW,

Is it better to have two large (2 x 100L) tanks or 1 x100L tank and smaller tanks - to get around this stale fuel problem?

Here is my scene now...Fishing 50km off mainland Nhulunbuy, and then say 20km cruising around and then another say 60km back to mainland on a 1989 OMC 2 stroke 110HP OB.

What do others do to combat stale fuel?

    Re: Fuel Questions

Yup to play it safe splash have your 2 x 100 litre tanks.

Cause I be thinking you would be using 90 plus litres of fuel per trip.
So go out with the older fuel in one tank, and drain it if you can.
Keep the fresh stuff for reserve. Then swap tanks next time always keeping the fresher fuel in reserve.

    Many thanks again Guts.

What plastic tanks do have baffles in them?

Upon partial tank fill in a non-baffled tank, free surface is said to occur - what is
"free surface", and, how is this very detrimental to lateral stability?

Which brand of tank does not have baffles in them?

    Re: Fuel Questions

re SOG, this is only inaccurate for land based vehichles that are increacing or decreacing altitude when traveling, even then the difference is minute. As the ocean hasno bumps in it, SOG will be spot on

    Re: Fuel Questions

Thanks Hamish - DO u have the spec. of that "fuel spec ball valve" you referred to on page 1?

    Re: Fuel Questions

Q1) Can anyone else provide spec. or model model of a fuel ball valve I may need in relation to above topic?

Q2) Also, will I be able to link my garmin GPS to my Navman Fuel 3100 flow meter to have speed (SOG) input?

Q3) What plastic tanks do have baffles in them?

Q4) Upon partial tank fill in a non-baffled tank, free surface is said to occur - what is "free surface", and, how is this very detrimental to lateral stability?

Q5) Which brand of tank does not have baffles in them?

Q6) What about SS tanks - what criteria should I consider when acquiring an underfloor SS fuel tank?

    Splash,

My apologies for this late reply.......have been away on Easter visits.

I doubt whether there is a stock marine fuel tank around the 85l~100ltr size which is fitted with longitudinal baffles. Anyway.......

When a relatively "wide" tank is partially full, the contents slop around from side to side causing the centre of gravity of the fluid volume to shift from side to side. This effectively reduces the lateral stability of the vessel and is termed free surface effect. In my case this effect is partially enhanced by the fact that I have a variable deadrise hull which inherently is a little sloppy at rest so if I lean out to port the transverse movement of the fluid centre of gravity will increase the list further. One way to prevent this problem is to install longitudinal baffling with small fore and aft drain holes to prevent the free surface fluid from slopping around. To demonstrate the effect, fill a frying pan 75% full and walk around the room holding it with one hand......."free surface effect".

I have been rethinking this whole fuel system setup and am considering removing the 85ltr centre tank with the view to running 2X25ltrs. Either way the new three way valve works very well.

    Good luck.

Chine - Why are u wanting to remove your 85L tank and replace with 2 x 25L tanks?

    Re: Fuel Questions

Splash: I dont know the specs of the valve you need, but it must one one specifically manufactured for fuel. Be careful as there are ones made for water too, which probably wont be suitable.
