Thread: GT Popping Land Based

    GT Popping Land Based

Just want to get some opinions here please.

I will be going GT popping land based off the rocks and Jetties in May this year.
Where I am going there are some seriously massive GT's well over the 25kg mark but being land based I am being realistic about this (after getting blown away last year) and want to tangle with the fellas around 10-15kg.
I am going to be using a Samurai NV9 custom built with a Shimano speedmaster with a beefed up drag which can now handle 10kg plus.....spooled up with 30lb fireline.
What I would like is some thoughts on are the best rigging set ups for popping.
I was planning on doing a bimini double in the braid then running a 100lb knotted dog leader joined via a loop to loop connection......Is this the best set up....?
Then when using the knotted 100lb leader is it best to crimp on your popper as when using fluro for your knotted leaders it becomes bulky and hard to tie?......
    Ideas please?

    Thanks
    Pete

I will give you my opinion if you stop beating my highscores in the arcade.. as i am heading up to the whitsundays next week to also do some serious gt poping with my tss4.

Are you asking the best way to connect your fireline to your leader or the leader to the popper?

NV8 is a great stick......I wanted something slightly heavier as well and I like the samurais. The NV8 will be coming too.

I would just tie a bimni twist then your leader straight to that the bimni gives you so much strength my mate pulled a 15 kg gt on looked drag out from the reef using 20 braid and 30 pound leader using a bimni twist, and i all ways make sure i have a bimni twist in my line when i go jacks fishing too.

Bimini then bristol knot as leader connection. Not sure bout the knot to the popper. It depends on leader strength. 100lb i think crimping would be best.

use an albright for your 100lb to braid and then crimp to popper or tie a loop knot

    Hi all,

All sounds very interesting, as I know jackall about knots and such.

But I'm very interested to here where you're going to do this land based popping, and at the least the results.

What type of water do you fish i.e.running, white water, clear water, incoming/outgoing tides all that ype of stuff.

    Hey Charlie,

Yeah I have used this set up before.
The problem with it is that doing an albright to 100lb leader leaves you with a reasonably bulky knot that doesnt pass through your guides well when casting.
This is why I am leaning towards using the knotted leaders as it gives you a slimmer connection....I know some guys use different set ups though...???

    Hi Rob,

The whitsundays is a fishing paradise!
Last year I caught HUGE queenies, diamond trevally, cuda, jacks, parrot, trout and got destroyed by BIG GT's........all land based too.
Any of the islands produce results around the headlands, jetties etc.....Find some deeper water and your in business.

    Cheers

10kgs of drag on a tss4, how long are you expecting the internals to last for.
