My wife and I have just returned from a 3 day fishing trip at Lake Awoonga with the in-laws, and a sensational weekend was had by all.
Arriving on Friday 30th we quickly settled in to two cabins at Awoonga Gateway Lodge - highly recommend it - only 5km from Awoonga, wonderful hospitality, near-new cabins with plenty of room to park the boat and 4x4 right beside the cabin.
Saturday morning the father-in-law and I met up with a local guide for the fishing charter that my wife had booked for my birthday. Wonderful bloke who took the time to explain where to find Barra, different techniques to use, and heaps of other useful information.
After a few hits, I was on - but not for long! Within seconds a large Barra leapt into the air and danced along the water. Simultaneously, and almost in slow motion, I saw it spit out my squidgie!!
On the edge of the main river bed I was on again, only this time Mr Barra decided to head for deeper water and some lay down timber. Another chance gone, along with a drop bear squidgie!!
Saturday contained both excitement and disappointment - we tried casting lures, then squidgies, and altough we managed to hook up a number of times - no luck with getting any in the boat. We were beginning to better understand the tales of the illusive Barramundi!!
Sunday was a different story!
The day started off slow, as we battled the gusty winds and a few hungry catfish! By late-morning however, I was holding my very first Barra - 88cm in length! Method - casting a squidgie in around weed beds on the end of a point.
Sunday evening saw the father-in-law fulfil a lifetime dream - to land a Barra over 1 metre in length. We set out after dark and were trolling near the main basin, but away from the crowd of boats that had gathered nearby. The conditions weren't the best, but we decided to make the most of our last night at the dam. Shortly after 9.00pm, the F-I-L was holding his first Barra - measuring in at 103cm! I honestly didn't think we'd top that, but just over an hour later, and with a busted landing net, he was proudly displaying Barra number two for the camera. Measuring just over 112cm
Proud to say that all Barra caught were handled with great care, and released to fight another day.
Things I learnt from my weekend at Lake Awoonga:
1. I strongly recommend getting a guide for your first trip. The knowledge that bloke shared played a vital part in our successful weekend.
2. Even though the weather might not look so good - put the boat in and have a go anyway!
3. My weekend at Awoonga - the best birthday present the misses has ever given me - well worth recommending to the woman in your life!!
Hey Darc, Congrats on a great fish!! Top report too. We Hope to add Awoonga to our Monduran trip next year!! Crafty little buggers aren't they!! I'd be asking for the same pressy every year.!!
Cheers Kim.
