Hilux 3y problems

Anyone got any tips on tuning my old bus of a hilux, its got a 3y engine that will not run properly, coughs and splutters. its had new plugs points filters etc and the carby was respindled a few months ago but still runs like a dog, any help gratefully recievd

check the dissy cap insnt cracked burnt spots etc
side to side movement in dissy
have you checked lead resistance or run the vehcile in the dark see if you can see sparks jumping around or running up the leads

compression test
the carbies do gum up in toyotas get things like choke sticking on
goes like a demon when moving but cant get the bugger to move from standing start etc

I had one of those and you have to keep all plugs, points, dizzy cap, leads and so on up to scratch. I found that playing around with the timing made a big difference.
I wouldn't change the carby. They were always heavy on fuel.

I had one for about 8 years. Put two reconditioned heads on the thing and 4 head gasket changes.

In between that was always mucking around with the timing and distributer. In the end the rings started to go so she sat in the back yard before selling it to Nuggets son.

Not sure how it's still going.

Found it was a car you always had to fiddle with. Have said that it did do some things it propable shouldn't have.

It was also a car you could fiddle with - unlike my TD5 Landy.

I have one I bought off my boss last year.
As mentioned before, the auto choke likes to stick sometimes.
Also, if it has an exhaust leak (like ours did) it will run like crap aswell.
re carby swap, there is a jap model tarago that has injection that ill bolt straight on, but will cost a bit no doubt. Try the import engine places if you want to go down that route.
