I recieved a`phone call the other day from one of ouir local nursing homes ..They had a fella 85 years young that suffers from Allzimers...He had asked that before he leaves Mother earth he had to catch one of them Awoonga Barras...could l help ??? Well theres a challenge... So last night we hit the water....Maybe that should be ..the water hit us....Cause it blowing 20 to 25 knots...not real nice...We could see about 10 boats trolling on the far side of wall...So we joined the line...Well thats not right... it was a case of just set your course and away you go.... Because if you tried to follow another boat you where told ..iss off or words to that affect.....And if you where silly enough to take a photo of your fish lookout .... like bees to a honey pot ...From every angle they came .. Reminded me of working in the Gulf... we used spotter planes to find the prawns they would send a message in code to say where they were ...There wouldnt be another boat anywhere ...Then you would see them... just specks on the horizon getting bigger...You only got one shot away before the other boats ploughed in behind Anyway back to the Awoonga Guild.. My new found friend thought this funny and he thought that the people in that rather large half cabin cruiser that every time we went past they would shine a large light in our faces was just saying hi....Or the guys without lights on there boat....must have a flat battery ... you can figure that one out...Did he fulfil his wish ...yes about five barras biggest about 75. lots of small fish around at the moment...We dont know what cards life will deal us l just hope that l dont get his disease its just so cruel ...
Andrew...it sure was different...Awoonga,s a big place but the fish where being caught just in this one area... about the size of a football field... we got our fish and hits going with the wind.......Nothing the other way....Toppy...yes l am sure this guy did it just to annoy us....But the old fella just waved back ..My response was more shall we say abrupt......
Nice touch Awoonga well done. 85 years young and still catching fish wow good on the nursing home and yourself for putting a smile on his face.
I also agree the Awoonga no lights on boat thing is a bit of a worry when coming back across the bay at night. A few close calls already.
Ha and as for being crowded with boats when you catch a fish ha it reminds us of Harvey Bay fishing for whiting in the 80's & 90's when you would have 40 boats all less than 5m apart as soon as you caught 2 fish ha. We used to have a call on the radio " bring over the asthma puffer" if a friend was on to fish LOL.
The bloke with the torch might have thought that you were a good sort and was mesmerised by your good looks. Also it is a well known fact that Nav lights scare barra. Don't you guys know that??? (HaaaHaa)
Good onya Trev. Thought that was your car there, forgot what it looks like. I was thinking you were going to change your name to Monduran.
Coming back last night from down the Southern end, testn some new lures, counted 3 boats trolling with electrics, none with nav lights. Bloody crazy. Full moons bring the lunatics.
Only got fish when running down wind eh?
Theres an answer in how to fish it right there.
Cheers
Jas
Yeh Trev, ya shoulda dragged the old fella down to Monduran. Had him casting in around the timber. He might've been better with the net than Wheezer too.
Hi Trev,
I only believe 1/2 of what I hear,And 3/4 of what I see.
What I do believe in is :- What goes round,Comes round.
A truley nice gesture. And I have no doubt,It will be returned to you,Sooner or later,One way or another.....Good on ya!
The underlying spirit of angling,Is that the skill of the angler,Is pitted against the instinct and strength of the fish,And that the latter is entitled to an even chance for his life. Regards, Hardb8.Kickin tails and razin scales since 1979.
Ah Trev...what a nice story...........has put a big smile on my dial I tell ya.
Still, I didn't think you would admit to the T word And how wonderful is the elderly chap just waving back at the spotlight.....that would have cheesed them even more.
He must have been a bit hard of hearing if he missed your response to them eh?
Hope to catch up for a beer with you next time Navi and I come up.
Awoonga,
Excellent work, to put a smile on old fisherman's face is something really special. I feel good things will come your way. Your description of the attitude of the old bloke to the idiots with no lights or shining a spotlight in your face brought a smile to my face. Last time I did a night fish at Awoonga, I played chicken with a couple of idiots with no lights on, kept heading towards them untill they turned on a torch. Comments that I liked their latest model nav lights were met with replies that cast doubts on my parentage. My reply tounge in cheek was that I had not seen them.
Keep up the good work Trev.
