Joining braid to mono ... this is new or is it ?

I have been thinking and I hope this is not dumb but what is wrong with using a swivel to join mono and braid ? I would just use a blood or uni knot to join them to the swivel.
At least you have no fear of the braid cutting through the mono.

My understanding is that braid is very strong in a linear direction, but it has a very low tolerance to abrasion. For this reason most like to add a good length of Mono or Fluorocarbon as leader, typically two meters or so. There are heaps of different knots that people use to minimize the knot diameter so that it is smooth when running through the guides. Now this is for your typical light gear estuary combo.

For heavier stuff like reef etc...Damn good question. I too will be interested in the responses given. As long as you are not dragging the swivel through the guides...I can't see why not.

I agree with BilgeBoy, I like to use at least a rod length of flurocarbon as a minimum. I think the swivel is just an extra thing that looks un-natural when trying to fool timid fish into taking my SP

for bottom bashing (not casting) out at sea this is what I do, pre tied rigs to the length of rod, 6/7' long
has been working for me, and is very quick and easy to change a rig when it gets roughed up, even been doing it on the float line with a meter of leader with pillies for bait. When I get into the SP's though I will ditch the swivel

I tried a few types of knots for leader to braid and had trouble with knot strength in the vice test but could not break it off when tied to a swivel

Well it looks like it was a good question and not a dumb one ... whew ! I do reef bottom bouncing, I have a TLD 25 with 80lb braid and 80lb leader. I am not very experienced and when I lost my leader the other night I had trouble remembering what and how to tie a knot.
I soon worked it out by using a albright knot but my mate and I seem to have a hit and miss with this knot.
I want to go after red's soon so I need a knot that'll work and is easy. The bimini twist is difficult and I just can't see me doing it at 1.00 am rocking in my boat.
Swivel it'll be for a try anyways !!!

The problem is what knot to tie the braid to the swivel i dont think there is any knot you can do that gives 90%+ strength. Like the bimini+bristol connection

I use 100lb fire line and have found that it can cut 125lb leader so I use solid brass rings. tie a double than tie that to the ring I just use a locked blood knot and than tie the leader to the ring. it has not let me down yet.

I use the same as you and have not had any bust off's, use a triple blood knot on the braid and a uni knot on the Mono, 50lb braid with 100lb jinkai.

If you do not need/want a wind on leader using a swivel (or solid ring) for the connection works just fine.

I use a snap swivel (one with a bit that you can open) tie a uni knot on the braid side and make a loop on the mono/fluoro side.

Makes changing rigs very easy.

I'm with you rumy. I have my leaders already made up with swivel and jig head, or hook attached. I join a swivel to my main line (braid) with the stren knot and the leader is joined to the swivel with a locked half blood knot.

At the end of the day I snip off the leader and the swivel is pulled up against the top eye. This way, each time I go fishing, I only have to tie on the appropriate leader without having to thread the main line through the rod eyes all the time.

My leaders are usually about a metre long which is castable, and in some situations this isn't ideal but imHO is preferable to having longer leaders with knots running through the eyes of the rod.

i have always used an "albright" but that is more with the heavier biads to mono... outside stuff.. with bass/bream i just use a double fisherman and stays fine

I bought a spool of "x" brand braid and tried heaps of my knot repitoire on it trying to get a decent breaking strain %, ( I got "whiplash" from the experiance, wink) and eventually tried a swivel. Great strength with a locked blood knot, especially with the braid doubled. Wasn,t any other way with the crap, but a "slim beauty" knot works fine for joining braid/ mono in most other brands/types.

I tie 30lb braid to a swivel using a palomar knot, then an improved clicnch knot for the 50lb leader to the swivel. Works fine.
