    3/3 Moon @ Callide Dam

Hi guys, I had a whirlwind trip upto Biloela & Monto last week for work & decided to drag the crawdad punt up with me. I only had a full days fishing on the Wednesday & fished till 8am on the Thursday. Lucky for me a couple of my mates were there already & had discovered 5mtr Halco Poltergeists & Kingfisher lures where working. Having left all my deep divers at home wally kindly tossed me a gold Halco complete with new Owner hooks. When I asked what colour was the go he said green, hmmmm.... and you gave me gold! I guess beggers can't be choosers.

With little time to waste I tied the lure on & began to troll. It was evident strait away that the colder water had forced the fish out of the shallows & they were all holding at 5mts on any bump or hilltop. 26degrees is less than ideal & I would have prefered it at 29degrees, but hey thats fishing, lots of variables.
During the day the water temp rose to about 27.2 & the fish became alot more active. They certainly didn't bite there heads off but the occasional fish was still being caught. I only managed to land one that went 95cms & was happy just to get one on the board. My Mates Wally & Sid clicked off a few shots for me in between them catching fish after fish.......green was definetly the go if you had it!

Next morning I was on the water at 4.30 & headed to the wall & the bubbler. I noticed the water temp had dropped again & was only 25degrees in the bulk of the dam. I was pleased to find the bubbler was almost one degree hotter & this lifted my confidence instantly.
Casting drop bears & jackals through the bubbles was what I tried first. After half an hour I switched to the new Jumbo Skick Rig in Fire Tiger & a Shimano lipless crankbait in a similar colour. I set the speed on the leccy to 1 & worked the length of the bubbles, allowing the lures to be worked in the lower third of the water depth. On the third lift the crankbait got wacked & a barra of about 90cms went skywards re-entering the water upsidedown. I wound out the slack created in the line, realising I was still connected. It was then I knew I hadn't upgraded the bass hooks on that perticular lure, DOOOOH!
I quickly backed the drag on the Zillion in hope of staying connected, it wasn't to be, the barra dropped it into low gear & said "thanks for comming".

The hooks parted & I wound back in a battle scarred version of what I had sent out. It still put a smile on my face & still does, because if you landed every fish it would get old real quick.
I retiered that lure & spent the last 1/2hr trolling the big slick rig. 3 more solid wacks but no hookups. My guess is I still have work to do on placement of the stinger hook. Some of these bites may be comming from under neath as fish rise from the depth. Just a thought!
All up I had fun @ Callide, the sun shone & the wind was kind to us & between us we caught some fish. What more can you ask for?

    Cheers for now

The underlying spirit of angling,Is that the skill of the angler,Is pitted against the instinct and strength of the fish,And that the latter is entitled to an even chance for his life. Regards, Hardb8.Kickin tails and razin scales since 1979.
