Does anyone kiss and release 'Reddies' or are all fish caught taken for the table?
There are some impressive pictures of 4lb plus fish on various web sites around Aus [Complete angler and flyfisher] [Australian kayak fishing forum] [fishnet.com.au]but as far as I can see all the fish are taken for the table, I'm sure some of the larger fish if released would grow on to be huge, I have no doubt a 10lb fish is possible from one of your waters, now that would be something to see....
Any thoughts?
Redfin aren't native to anywhere in Aus, and compete with native fish for food in areas they inhabit. Any redfin, or other exotic fish caught in aus should be taken for the table in my opinion. How are the redfin populations in the UK? Does any waterway in the UK have pest/non-endemic fish species?

Perch or as you call them 'Reddies' are very common in the UK, You can catch them from virtually every water, still and running, a 1kg fish is regarded as a specimen by most anglers although not many target Perch specificaly, some specimens get caught by accident when targeting other species.
The best venues for really big perch are the rivers Great Ouse, Kennet and recently the Thames, fish of 4lb are much sought after and there are also a few over 5lb caught each year, some still waters produce fish over 5 lb although these are few in number. The current UK record is 5lb 15oz.
Most popular baits are earthworms, live fish baits (gudgeon and roach) and some of the bigger fish come out to dead baits.
WE employ a catch and release policy and for this reason the bigger specimens become increasingly hard to catch, obviously they learn something from the experience of being caught, unlike your Reddies which only get caught once and therefor, don't have the benefit of hindsightThis will probably explain the reason why (once located) they are easy to catch.
If we took them for the table I am sure they would be wiped out in no time at all.
The non native species in UK waters are the carp (most anglers love em) Zander - a predator that was introduced into one river system and is now quite common all over the South and Midlands, it has been spread by anglers as well as naturally, at fist it was feared the Zander would affect our native predators, Perch, Pike and Chub. There seems very little evidence to suggest this is the case. The other 'non native' is the American signal crayfish, this crayfish is driving our own native crayfish to the point of extinction, Although there are quite a few people who believe the intoduction of these signal crayfish into our rivers is responsible for the increasing size of the Perch and Chub being caught from these rivers. Some people trap and eat the crays but not enough people to affect the crayfish population.
I read somewhere that lake Toolondo has dried up! Does this mean the water has dried up or the fishing?

Isn't it illegal to return Redfin to the water? I suspect that many anglers do return them. I have always found them to be a good by-catch. Better a Reddie than nothing, thats for sure. I have never come across them in anywhere near plague proportions but someone might be able to shed some light on how bad they may be in some areas.
Yeh Pato I thought it was illegal to release them.The only place I've struck them in plague proportions was out at Pindari Dam quite a few years ago,apparently when they breed up like this they also sucumb to a stunted groth rate so you end up with masses of Redfin all around six inches long.As far as eating goes I've eaten plenty worse and wont turn my nose up at a fillet or two if I'm out camping,they are impossible to scale so you either have to fillet and skin or as my mate showed me simply throw the whole fish guts and all into hot coles,once cooked the scales with coles attached simply peel off with the gut little more than a dryish ball the size of a macca nut revealing nice white moist flesh.

I had a couple of mates who camped at Pindari before christmas 06. picked up half a dozen redfin up to 1kg for afew days fishing. Maybe just harder to find inbetween the cod, yellas and silver perch. Steve.

Caught 97 redfin in Pindari one session, biggest was about 6 inches, and you are spot on in that they get stunted when in plague proportions. Same thing in Copeton dam 20 years ago, 120 + in one session. All about 5-6 inches.

Yeah they are a notorious predator on small fish.... thats why fish like Reddies, Perch, Bass, Pike, Barra etc are called Predators, fish are what they live on, they are also canibalistic and control their own numbers. The reason you get big shoals of small reddies is coz some guys caught the big ones that eat the small ones and didn't put 'em back, so there is nothing to eat the small ones, except for the blokes who ate all the big ones, if you know what I mean....

Hardly, mate. There are only a few blokes go for redfin. Why fish for a redfin when a bloke can get a 15-20 lb cod, or a 6-9 lb yellowbelly in the same water??
Each to his own mate... If we was all the same life would be such a drag
I can see the appeal of catching Cod, Barra etc...
