Allround off shore rod and reel

    Hi all

I am in the hunt for a new rod and reel for fishing from a boat in the bay. Something that is a good all-rounder up to $250

    Any recommendations?

    Moreton Bay??

something like a 10kg spin oufit? Shimano are having one of their sales atm.
or a Penn Spinfisher from k mart + shimmano stick?

there should be specials at the Tinnie & Tackle too.

Re: Allround off shore rod and reel

Spinner outfit I'd go with a shimano spheros $200 + a 10-15kg uglystick, backbone or similar for $80-100(always get a higher quality reel over a rod IMO,as a rod if just a bendy hunk of stuff) Im not saying a high quality rod isn't worth it. But if your on a budget I always spend most of my money on a reel.

For an overhead. I'd go with a shimano charter special or TLD and an overhead rod around $100 to match. somthing like a silstar powertip 10-12kg

Both set ups will cost you around $280 and last you ages and catch 95% of fish you hook. You will be getting a high quality reel thats not going to explode after 1 season of use

as soon as you mention "all round" it means you will compromise a lot, so my advice is to go for a biggish threadline reel (maybe Penn Spinfisher) and a fairly fast taper rod, that will allow you to cast a bit, but have some power in the butt to enable you to handle some of the bigger specimen you may encounter, there is a lot of off the shlf stuff around now that will suit your needs, try to stay away from the Department stores, as there will be no one there who will have a clue what you want, and you will wander around and pick up some "combo" that may be useless to you, go to a tackle store and get some advice from the guy/girl there first off, as they will be in your area and know what you may need, but try a couple, not just the first one and see if they "add up"

This is always a difficult one to answer. Something for the bay shallows, but also for the deeper water is a compromise. For just one rod and reel, I would go a spin in about a 4000 size. Get Shimano or Daiwa. Depends on teh model and what specials you can get, but they both have good models for around the 150.00 mark. Then a graphite rod in about 7ft in about the 6 10kg weight. Graphite is lighter and strong, so can be a bit overpowered for the shallows, and a bit under powered for the deeper areas and get away with it. Spend about 100.00 on a graphite and it should be good quality. 20lb braid and 20lb black majic leader for lighter fishing, and 40lb for the deep or rough country and you will be able to fish most of the bay ok.

OH and if you skimp on the rod and get a "bendy hunk of stuff" as stated, you will soon be dismayed at fishing with a "piece of cooked noodle" or just as bad "a broomstick with a few guides" try to get a fair match for what you are after.

Get a penn spinfisher 8500ss from mo tackle for around $215 including rod. The penns will last ya for decades.

Thanks for all the advice... it seems that the best thing for me to do is blow the bank and get the right rod and reel for the right type of fishing. You can never have enough fishing gear anyway!

hey dogsbody, I went for a look at one of their 50% off sales, seemed to me that it was a 50% ON sale, only thing on sale was all the sh!t that they had left over and would probably never sell without putting on sale, so make sure you know what you want and the proper price!

I have never used an overhead rod. What are the benefits of one of these over a normal spinner?

Re: Allround off shore rod and reel

BCF are selling Shimano Baitrunner reels (egg beaters with a bait feeding facility)currently starting from around $190. I have the 4500 and the 6500 and both are excellent reels and will catch almost all you will ever hook up to in Bris. The best I have done is a 20kg tuna. The reel took it all in its pace. I bet there are stories that better this by a long shot. Its got a good drag set up too! Use the rest of your cash to buy a 10-15 kg Ugly Stick or similar.
