Haughton Jacks
Hi All,
Fished the Haughton River (50km south Townsville) for the first time on Sunday. Picked a few likely spots using google earth and headed down the river. On water by 6:30 and headed straigh for good spots to throw the pots in before getting serious about fishing.
Tide was falling so after putting pots in and with the water still a little high for gathering live bait decided to throw the lures at some promising snags and mangrove roots. Using the electric to silently move up a creek managed a nice starter fish in the form of a jack to 39cm caught on a jackall tn-70 HL Gold.
Not long further up the creek was lucky enough to hook up again only for the hooks to pull after a short fight.
Up the top of the creek collected some bait and headed of to fish another spot and explore the river a bit. The next few hours were slow so decided to find a big nasty snag and send some jack jellybeans(Mullet 6cm) to its fishy fate. After 20 min or so and the deckie saying there was no fish here and we should move and my abu 6500 lets out a scream. With line tight and fish powering back to the snag I was hung up. After a few minutes and untying the boat to float over the snagg the fish luckily decided to come out in to open water and into the boat.
The jack was nice and dark red and was not huge but a solid little fish to 45cm.
With the tide turning decided to check pots and find the pots full and ended up with 6 keeper bucks. All in all a great day . Enjoy the pics.
Cheers
Aaron
