What price on new outboard 70 - 85 HP

What sort of $$ am I looking at for a new 2 stroke.

I WOULD like a 4 banger, but weight is a priority on my bum-heavy boat.

I already have too much weight in the rear, courtesy of my OLD 115 HP evinrude, twin batteries and two portable fuel tanks.

I would like the boat to be a bit higher in the bum when standing at the rear whilst fishing.

Any idea how heavy the old '76 Evinrude 115 HP is?

    Boat is 4.9M glass half-cab.

Currently looking at Tohatsu TLDI 70 and Evinrude E-Tec 75, but am open to suggestions.

he has already stated he does not want the weight of a 4 stroke, so not much use telling him to get one! if you are going for a 3 cylinder 2 stroke, the old 90HP Yamaha takes a lot of beating, it is the same weight as a 70HP (same motor sort of) weighs a "piddly" 120KG is not a really powerfull engine because of its size, but is light as a feather, uses bugger all fuel, and nearly unkillable as far as mechanicals go, and probably as powerfull as your old 115 which was probably measured at the head instead of at the prop.

what does a 70 etec weigh.or a 70 tldi . it's 2007 why buy a polluting old technology motor.don't you care about the enviroment and a di or 4 banger will hold there value better down the track when he wants to sell.as for 70hp he needs to know what his hull weighs to get correct hp[power to weight]

Why buy old technology in 2007, well for myself and many others it comes down to $ and secondly proven reliability. For the extra few thousand $ in cost price I can justify the greater fuel consumption my outboard uses for the amount of hours I use it every year. And since I don't use my outboard every week and will probably hold on the motor for many years, I know that it is a basic two stroke motor that will last for years to come. How many people out there with electronic fuel injected cars that are over 15 years old had no problems at all at any stage with electronics. I know that once warranty runs out that there will eventually be disgruntled boatowners out there trying to justify the extra expense of technology against the cost of repairs to conventional motors.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I wouldn't mind going 90HP but the hull is only rated to 85HP according to a little badge on the back.

It is an old hull - around 30 years I'd guess. Sea Sprite brand - Never heard of 'em.

I'd hate to have to make an insurance claim and have them knock me back for the sake of a few HP.

Maybe I could take the badge off the back if calculations for max HP work out more generous than the badge does.

Does anyone know the calculation for working out max HP based on hull dimensions?

Also - I'd like the injected versions of motors, but the whole boat is only worth 4K. So I think that it would be very difficult to justify all those $$$ for etec etc.

I do have consideration for the environment - and my bank balance. The minister of war and finance will only approve the cheaper solution.

    Weight comparisons so far

    Evinrude E-Tec 75HP Weight 145.45 Kg
    Tohatsu TLDI 70 Weight : 141 kgs
    Tohatsu M 70 (std 2 st) 115 kgs
    Mercury 75hp OptiMax : 164kg
    Mercury 75Hp MID-RANGE : 138kg
Yamaha 70BETOL (std 2 St) 105.5 Kg with prop

So the yammie wins on weight.

    Any opinions?

Sea dog,I had the same dilemma when I recently upgraded.

    Boat only rated to 85hp.

The old 70 that was on it just didnt perform though,so I had no real choice.I had to put at least a 90 on it.

Even now I only get 30knts at wot.Though I'm happy with it.Just thought I might squeeze a few more clicks out of her.

Mines an Etec, great motor!(had to slip in that little endorsement).

To my mind a 70hp is out (esp 4 stroke) a 75 merc due to it's big cubic inch might be in on the bottom side, the same merc in 90hp would probably match your 115 in performance but use a little less fuel due to it being a 3cyl.

The environment as justification for a DFI or 4 stroke is a sucker punch unless freshwater impoundment fishing to at least a small degree, fuel economy, noise and other manners are justified IMO.

If you do go 4 stroke you will need to add up to 30% more HP to gain comparable performance to a 2 stroke so in most cases performance for performance DFI wins very well over 4strokes.

I agree with Noelm about the 90yam I weighed it all up and went for a second hand one of these due to it's reliability and fuel economy, but IMO it will be slower everywhere than your 115 due to the 90 being a 3cyl of smallish capacity.

The merc 90 is more agricultural and sells often on BMT packages, so a lot of these hit the secondhand market once the glow of just owning a boat dies down a bit and gets replaced with a DFI or 4 stroke they can be had with bugger all hours for 6.5K seen a few when I was shopping round about the same price for the yam also.

Re: What price on new outboard 70 - 85 HP

I decided to try the Australian standard for working out max HP by measuring length X transom width at waterline X 16 - 67 X 1.34

The hull which was advertised as 4.9M, registered as 4.9M, insured as 4.9M only measures 4.5M

Somebody stole 400mm of my boat.

Maybe that 400mm was the bit that held the @rse end up a bit.

Anyhow the calculation comes out at 69.4 HP max.

So perhaps the 70 HP is looking OK.

The moral of the story is - assume nothing and trust nobody.

Well it goes without saying you were happy with the 115hp , a person cannot buy a boat without a tape measure it seems, suspect your boat was measured around the gunnel, was once common.

70 may suit, I would go with the merc 75 or if they do an opti on this engine it would go ok. Take it to someone qualified to re-rate it up a few HP, it's more about weight than pure HP.

    cheers fnq
