    brag mats

hi all I recently purchased a brag mat

only to measure it today and find out it reads shorter by 2cm at the 120cm line
and 1cm at the 50cm mark so to me now its basically worthless back to the tape measure for me

has any other ausfishers checked theres and any tips for making it read right im wondering if you could maybe stretch it out using heat ?

    Re: brag mats

    Gees I'd better check mine.
That would be a bad turn of events if you measure fish on them and then get busted for having undersized fish

OK just checked it its 10mm out pretty much from the get go.
I might try and hang it up to stretch it. If not I'll simply move the stopper.

thanks for the tip off. i would hate to keep an under size fish.

P.S. mine states at the bottom that its only a guide and not a legal measurement.

    Re: brag mats

Mate, I'd be taking it back to the place I bought it and make a fuss.
1 or 2 cm is the difference between being legal and a criminal.
    Not good enough!
I'd be so p!ssed off if I was busted when I thought I was obeying the law.

Perhaps that's why they call 'em brag mats..............it lets you brag that yours is bigger than it actually is.

    Re: brag mats

    Yeah right kev.
    I caught a 2metre spotty mackeral today!
Least that's what the brag mat said!

Seriously, how hard would it be to ensure that the bloody thing is accurate.
No wonder fisherman have a reputation for exaggeration.

    Re: brag mats

I had a nasty one recently.

Fisheries checked my catch and my keeper was just 35cm No way I said, that thing was a good 38 on my measure....So they put it against mine and it was 38. Now fisheries had one with a flat on the end that they butt the fish up against.

I now put another 5cm on any legal limits!! Talk about lucky.

Good topic but, sure makes you think about it!

    Hi Theo,

Knowing how serious some barra fisho's are I'm surprised that you are so blase about length, when you know that the measuring stick is wrong.

What is the point in actually measuring the fish if you know its false!

Sorry to be so anal about this, but either the barra is 100cm or its only 97cm.

    Why bullshit about it?

    Cheers Scott

I'm with you Scott,,, whats the point,, spending $25+ for soming that is not useable .. great marketing,, selling something that can't be trusted for anything other than a door mat, if that

    Re: brag mats

    Scott and Noel,

Bragmats... unuseable? Thats abit heavy mate. Not only are they the best, and easiest way to measure a fish, but they don't cause any damage to the fish if wetted down properly, unlike measuring the fish on hot carpet or aluminium where you could inflict alot of stress on the fish. I honestly don't see why a minority of you should kick up a stink about them possibly being a few mm's out. Don't mean to cause a stir, and Im sorry if I have Scotty, but its no real big drama in my mind... Im not losing sleep over my bragmats being a tad short...
