    Soft or Hard

Rito you chat Police, due to this being a question concerning Fresh and Salt, I wasn't sure where to put it so be patient.

    OK

What is the best when targetting a variety of fish in brackish water? Soft Plastic or Hard Lure.

Our Fishing Club is running a ONE Lure Comp. late April on the Orara and Clarence Rivers (Grafton for those that were wondering).

Anyway, the water will be brakish (leaning towards fresh) and we know that there will be Bass, and catties. But there could also be Bream and Flathead (Eastern Cod will not be able to be entered).

So what would be the best type of Artificial bait that could be used for these species.

    Remember!
    One Lure:
That is used for up too eight hours fishing/Luring,
    Hard or Soft
Give us your Preferred Hard &
    Give us your Preferred Soft

This should get your tongues wagging and your fingers typing.
Be gentle in your answering as I am a simple fisher person

    Regards
    Rob

    So Rob,

Just clarifying, you are only allowed to use ONE lure, hard or soft during the eight hours, and you are not allowed to change from one to the other? What if you have the same lure, but in different colours, or the same lure, but different bib sizes??

    Re: Soft or Hard

What happens if you lose ya lure, are you then out.
If so I would use a hard body because you tend to use a heavy leader with a hard over a soft plastic type lure with less effect on the action. So to maximise the chance of keeping the lure and minimising the chance of loosing it to a snag or fish, go hard

    Re: Soft or Hard

Would be thinking hard.Don't think a placcy would last 8 hrs.
Maybe a deep diver of some sort this way you could slow the retrieve down and work the lure near the surface or work it as normal to get it down near the bottom.

    Re: Soft or Hard

    A quick clarification.

You are allowed FIVE of the ONE Lure, that is exactly the same, same brand colour, style and shape etc etc.

Not overly sure on bib size, but as I am the President of the Club thats putting this on, and I at least help to make the rules?

I think that at other comps of this nature, the lures have to be exactly the same, including bib size.

    The comp is

Day 1 Fishing commences at 6.30a.m, stop for lunch at 12.00 recommence fishing at 1.00p.m. Fishing stops at 6.00p.m (depending on light) Score sheets in by 6.30p.m.

Day 2 (One Hour recovery comp)
One LUre Only, lose it and you're out.

This is a farely friendly outing and invloves a lot of socialising

First Prize, hand your lure over to be mounted on a board, and maybe a T shirt and or cap.

    Great weekends

    Re: Soft or Hard

A hard body deep diver which also can be worked in shallow water would be the way to go I reckon.

    Re: Soft or Hard

i'd use a popper, they are almost impossible to snag and i did alright right up the clarecnce around the ramp at junction hill and then about another 6 - 10 k up when you cone to a rocky outcrop and loots of reeds

with the 5 of same type rules.....how does it apply to a soft plastic lure. is the plastic itself considered the lure or does the jig head form part of the lure also and as such require you to use only 5 of the same jig head???

    Re: Soft or Hard

    Hi Rob,
Sounds like a cool comp. The lure you should use is the lure you trust the most/Have the most confidence in.Somehow I think you know what one ya gonna use already.I can hear the gears clickin over in ya head from here.Ya probably down to about three or four lures that regularly work well for ya.Trust ya gut You know which one.Tie it on and fish it hard!

    Good luck.
The underlying spirit of angling,Is that the skill of the angler,Is pitted against the instinct and strength of the fish,And that the latter is entitled to an even chance for his life. Regards, Hardb8.Kickin tails and razin scales since 1979.

    Roo

As far as I'm conserned, The plastic plus jig head combined = 1 lure?

But we will work out the finer details at our next meeting.

All of the One Lure's I've been in have been on Dams chasing Yellow's and Cod, Hard Lure's have been the go.
The fella's from out west have all been asking what type of lure is the best for over here. As I've never really given Lure fishing in the Clarence a go I haven't been able to answer them, so I naturally thought I'd ask all of you tallented fisherfolk on Ausfish.
