    Spinning reel purchase

I want to get into throwing round a few lures, SPs and HBs. I want something that holds about 250m of 6kg line. Something big enough to throw poppers off the rocks, but not too big to use throwing SP's for flathead, bream and squire. I also want a spare spool so I can have one spool rigged with light line, and one with heavier line.

PRICE IS AN ISSUE - I'm constantly struggling to balance the financial responsibilities of a young family with my never ending desire to spend every last cent on fishing gear. . . . Begrudgingly, feeding & clothing my family comes first.

    Any suggestions???

You could try one of the Penn Affinity 4000 they are around the $160 mark . they have a good drag and good spool capacity and are very tough, i havent had any dramas with mine.

Here's the tip, buy the kids bigger clothes. They'll grow into em and when they get too small tell 'em muscle shirts and old AFL style footy shorts are back in fashion! Spend the money saved on more tackle! Problem solved

I have the Penn Affinity as well and am really pleased with it. You can do a lot better than $160. I got mine for around the $100 mark

4000 sized reels might be a bit of a struggle for breaming but will be ideal for all other options you listed. As for the 250m of 6kg line a 4000 will just about swallow 250m of 4kg braid, but this is plenty of grunt for what you want to do. I've got a shimano symetre for this sort of combo and it works very well. has accounted for a few Longtail tuna, jacks and big flatties so far. other reels to look at would be the stradic if the budget can stretch that far or the daiwa excellor and new excellor plus. The penn applause is a good budget reel and the affinity is only a few bucks more but better again, worth it in my opinion although the Penn's don't have a spare spool, you can get them from their spares dept. for about $35 if you need one. to be honest, I don't think a spare spool is that necessary, my symetre spare spool went unused for a year until l happened to have some spare line to put on it.

good luck shopping. don't forget, baked bean sandwiches for a few weeks are not that bad in order to pay for a good supply of seafood.

Try ebay for a second hand deal or MO Tackle has Penn Applause for $99 basically shop around on the net you will save $$$$$ on retail. For example a shimano nexave went for $50 on ebay sienna's for $59 from MO tackle plus postage MO tackle will post up to 5kg for $10 so yuo can get line and tackle and save more have fun shopping
I dont work for either company (yet )

In exactly the same situation at the moment and lost my whole combo over the edge recently. Currently looking for a new rig. I think I have settled on a drop shot rod but the reels are a hard one. So many options, so much rubbish out there. Here is what I am learning.

The Penn 4000 looks great for the money. Poodroo picked one up on a rod at K%$rt for $49...but do you think I can find one, They are about $79 and have a great drag system. I have also been looking at the Shimano's and yes the symetre is a great reel. The thing is, when you start looking at the other reels in the range, the cheaper ones just seam as good, on the action and drag, as some of the more expensive options!! One thing is for sure, you can by a reel cheaper when it is attached to a rod and sold as a combo.

I am hanging out for the Tackle and Tinnie show to see what is on offer...Good luck and see you there
