Mmmmm sounds like very dangerous stuff to me. At least you got out of his way or things would have been very nasty. "Call the cops" up to you but I don't think you will get anything done about it but you never know I guess
Went out to Mud Island today to see if I could pick up a feed of sweet lip. Got there about 5am and got straight onto a lot of undersized squire and sweet lip.
I stayed in the one spot feeding the fish for a while until I noticed a trawler coming towards me. I was getting a photo of him to use it as an excuse if I didn't get any decent fish.
Anyway I kept watching him as he got closer and closer and closer until I thought "holy crap, he's not going to turn". I started my motor quick and moved out of his way at full throttle. As he went past the back of my boat I looked to see if I could see anyone on board and I could only see one person down the back sorting the catch.
I assume he was just running on auto pilot while going about his environment destroying duties!?
There were a few other boats out at mud at the time, anyone from here? If so did you happen to see it?
So should I do anything about this? Call the cops?

It's all part of the fishing experience
Yes I'm very lucky and happy that I got out of his way.
I also just noticed that there are birds sitting on his radar, probably a good indication that it isn't working? So if he was on auto pilot he probably wouldn't know if there was a bloody big container ship in his way.

That's a really dangerous situation, if you can make out his registration it would be worthwile sending it to Workplace Health and Safety. No trawler (or any vessel) should be underway without a proper watch.
They're too fond of doing that. I noticed the Pine trawler skipper emptying crap over the back of his boat last time out. He was looking astern whilst the boat was underway and there was no other crewman on board. Thought about reporting the tosser but he'd probably just dent it...........it's not like the Pine is wide enough to give you a wide berth. Anybody fishing with their back to the tide (as is usual) could've copped it from him.

Holy Schizen housens !! mate I am pretty sure this bloke bases himself from Cabbage tree creek.. If I were you I would head down there this arvo and throw my soiled undergarments at his vessel to let him know you aren't happy !
Good thing you didn't just assume he would turn away

Is your rod in the pic bending from a fish or a snag?
Take Care T
Kev, You'd think these days trawler operators would be trying to stay below the radar(so to speak) and not draw to much attention to them selves.
Russell, yeah I'm pretty sure he is from cabbage tree. I did think about going back this afternoon but I would most likely just get myself in trouble. I think I'll just let it slide this time and make sure I have the sling shot on my boat at all times from now on.
T, I got snagged up on some coral when I move out the way of the trawler.

hi matey
the same thing happened to me yesterday out side the seaway,
a chater boat was doing some trolling only on the top deck he was facing the wrong way talking to his customers in stead of looking where he was going
there was got to be 20 people on board you would have thought somebody would have seen a bright orange stabicraft he only just missed me the dick head
cheers bob
The bloody water is getting as bad as the road
Shane
back when I did my apprenticeship at TMQ, all commercial vessels with a autopilot fitted had to have a 'watch alarm'. A watch alarm had a flashing light at 4 minutes, a buzzer at 5 minutes and a siren at 6 minutes. When resetted, the timing sequence would start over again. This was all that was required back then. Rules may have changed since then (1990)
That's just great!
Yet another thing that will be added to the list of things for the water police to inspect.
1. Lifejackets - check
2. V sheet - check
3. Flares - check
4. registration sticker - check
5. License - check
FOG HORN???? And we wonder how people can go missing in the bay...... I can stop wondering.

This has been happened to me last week too , very much the same incident when i was out at the Brisbane Rever mouth on the left handside opposite the Brisbane Port trying to pick up my POTS and I saw a trawler was behide me approx 100m away comming toward me when I just pick up the pot I was trying to empty the pot from the under size sandies , I keep looking back at the trawler to make sure I'm away from him as he's getting close to me I assumed that he must turn away from me BUT he just keep going straight into me then I said to myselft SHIT I have too move quickly out off here , he was about 30m behide me so I quickly leave the pot hanging on the side of the boat with one hand holding the rope other trying to turn the steering when he passed me I saw the man was at the back sitting down trying to sort out the prawns and no one else with him ... my hart was saking for a while & I said to myselft I was lucky to move away from him . This could be the same guy that ran in to you today Shane .
just think what would happen if it was night time
