Broken Rod but Jack still defeated

Well after a calm spell and myself missing a 5 -10 knot weekend due to conference (didnt the guys let me know it to ) I have been keen to get on the water. Afternoon sessions were the key at this stage and it was good to get the electric wet and get a few nice golden trevors around the local jetty on lures as te weather pattern changed to one most undesirable.

With better qaulity fish in mind and the news that fingermark were on the chew at spot X my neighbour andf I set out to see if we could get the short strokers singing. Alas the weather turnind very ordinary 2 metre swell so we were stuck to fishing in the local harbour which does hold good barra and jacks but it can be very fickle at times.

So i put the big rods out the back with some good squid baits and set about rigging up my 2kg spin stick with a small long shank hook and squid bait to see if i could keep myself busy. 3 bream and a co later and then to short stroken goes rank only to see a bloody huge catfish find its way to the boat. So I settle back with a cold bogues in one hand watching the squid light when all of a sudden the 2kg rod is bending hard and running for the mangroves. I crank the drag only to hear an almighty snap and witness my rod break in two. Dropped the rod then proceeded to handline the fish in on 10lb braid which hurt like hell.

He made it home to the freezer and now I can go rod shopping again which will make the missus happy. Thinking of a Ian Miller Rack raider this time. Managed a couple of good squid in the end which came to the light.

All an all a good 3 hour session.

Nice jack hope your fingers aren't too cut up. What sort of rod did you break?

Nice fish. Thats one of the problems with running 10 lb braid on a 4lb rod . Some batches of fireline break at almost double stated B/S .

SWounds like a good excuse for going shopping

      Cheers

Nice jack mate, well done. Shame about the rod - least you get to go shopping now though

Ouch, that sounds dangerous. Nice result tho, he looks a good size.
