Thursday AM Southport Seaway GT
I set out early on Thursday in the hope of repeating my recent success with the Trevs off the Southport Seaway rockwall. High tide was around 7.00 am and I am realizing that you can really only effectively fish there around an hour or two either side of high.
I arrived about 4.30 am and flicked poppers around from a few spots along the wall. By about 6.00 am I was right at the far end casting north. There was not much wind but a fair swell and no surface activity. As often happens down that end I lost a smallish popper that got snagged on the retrieve so I changed it for a River To Sea Dumbbell Popper – a huge red and white thing which certainly does not look much like a fish but leaves a good wake, bloops well and casts a good distance.
Third cast and the rod bends over and the drag starts singing – he takes off out towards Auckland but then decides to head back in and round towards the rocks at the front. I make a bit of headway and drag him back but he goes down buy the rocks and the surf is now rubbing the 8lb fireline against the rocks. I only have a 1- 3kg rod so I realize I am not going to get him out up and over without snapping it. I just have to hope I can persuade him to swim round and along the rocks a bit to where I might be able to reach him. I loosen the drag and he briefly ventures out and I get my first look at him – a decent GT.
Well to cut a long story short he carries on in and out a few times but then finally the line stays tight but stops moving. I loosen the drag but there is still no movement and I realize he is gone and the lure is stuck on the rocks somewhere down there.
There were a few GTs around and two other fisherman with bigger rods landed one each - one using a spoon and one on a Pilchard
I love fishing but I love it more when you get to take them home with you!
