    Johnson 4 Stroke

hey all, I am looking at buying a 140Hp Johno 4 stroke. It has 336 hrs on the clock. is this a lot for a 4 stroke? Apparently a lot of these hours have been racked up while idling. Does this change anything? And how do Johno's perform as an outboard?

    Cheers.

Well it ain't really a Johno, it's a Suzuki, painted white.
Idling yeah not the best for a motor, but if the price is right I would have it.

Roughasguts - What are the negative effects of idling? I just presumed that a low work load would cause less wear and tear?

    Re: Johnson 4 Stroke

Oil stays fairly cold. Imputities build up and stay in the oil, therfore not the greatest lubrication going on there.

So the impurites build up, including diluted oil that gets mixed with fuel and can't burn off. That may start to glaze up the bores and bearings, including crank, and cam, surfaces, also helps build up carbon in the head and valve seats, and under rings.
Also the carbon build up narrowing the oil gallerys. So there is a possibility all that idling will shorten the motors life. So the best thing would be a de-carb for the motor and a few good oil and filter changes and some fairly hard runs in between to clear her out.
But I would still get the motor if the price was right.

    Hey Mate!
I would call 336 hrs just warmed up.
I know of pro's that have done more than 5 thousand hrs. This is more than the average fisho clock's up in 2 life time's.
    Go for it dude!

Get a compression test done on the cylinders first. I have the same motor with 137 hrs in 12 months, and can't fault the motor. On a trip out Hutchies, Cape and East of Moreton I'll get about 10L/hr for fuel use, roughly 6hrs run time and about 150 to 170 k's. Depends a lot on what rig you will put the motor on and what prop it will have but you won't be dissapointed.
