One Keeper and Lost my New Rod

I went for my first solo run today and what a corker of a morning it was!!

Launched down at the Cleveland VMR and headed up towards Wello, fished the drops offs along the way and found some interesting ground on the sounder. Loaded a Placky and off we go....ya just gotta love fishing!! Conditions were dead calm and there was just enough current to move me ever so slowly along...a few minutes into the first drift and bang, a keeper squire on board. Here is were things got ugly.

I flick the SP back out, and then put my rod down momentarily to bleed the squire I had just landed...just grab hold of the squire and a knife and I hear CLUNK, CLUNK...look around to see the last 2 inches of my new baitcaster heading over the edge %$#@& Yeah yeah, I made a pathetic lung for the rod, but it was GONE! I just cant believe I did it, I know better!!

I turned the rest of my morning into a surveying trip for next weekend, then back to the ramp by lunch. As I was packing the boat up some fisheries fella's were surveying and asked my what I had caught and from where. Probably just two blokes looking for fishing spots

Oh well, no more baitcaster! Probably a good thing really, bird nesting mongrel of a thing it was. Perhaps an eggbeater this time round!!

Bugger huh? That would make anyone of us irate. Time to put proper rod holders in huh? Oh well... can highly recommend the Penn egg beaters for good value. Hope you get your revenge on the fish next trip.

    Regards,

Ahhh, the old Wello rod curse strikes again! A great mate did that once but we got it back about 2 hours later - with fish still attached! We'll never forget that one!

T1, that is amazing!! how lucky is that to catch your own rod back.

Poodroo, I have rod holders, just had a brain fade!!!!! You guys both fish this area a fair bit, what is a nice combo to go with for SP's. Nothing to expensive, perhaps a 7' with a mid range spinner...the Penn you say??

    Hey BILGE!

The story is in a post somewhere from last year but it was the funniest thing watching this rod shoot out of the boat! SMUDO didn't think so but i still laugh everytime the topic is brought up!

If you want a recomendation, after the Threadie and Spanish Mack, i wouldn't recomend anything but the Redington RFX 7' - about to buy a 2nd! I also use a Daiwa 2500 Primax which also did the job on both occassions although i did buy two Stradic 2500's when i was OS. Yet to use mine but TINN has used his and quite likes it!

    Hope this helps! T

Look on the bright side - Losing a nice rod will only happen ONCE in everyone's lifetime How do I know? The only rod a mate and I custom built from a sneiderglass blank lies somewhere around the mouth of the Logan river

Even if my rods are not in the rod holder, I have at least one foot on the butt, and the line does not even need to be in the water

There is merit in getting good gear from the top shelf like shimano straddics, but not everyone can justify that purchase from the finance director ( ie: Wife) but I am not disagreeing with you T.

So Poodroos' suggestion on the Penn is a good one, I actually started him on that, by getting a Penn applause 4000 which is fantastic and only cost me $125.00. Take a good look at the drag System which appears very different when you take the front locking nut off. This might explain why ther drag is so smooth - your best friend when a Snapper takes a long run.

That is very unlucky to lose a rod like that.

Also had a mate who lost his rod and reel out at flat rock many years ago, 2 years later he ends up bring it back up and he ended up taking it home, no sure why, he should have just left it there, it had already turned itself into an artificial reef with molluscs and shells and coral all over it.

Question, Why were u bleeding a squire? Do many people bleed their squires?

Ah ha! That's why i AM the finance director in my house (i guess being a Mortgage Broker might have something to do with it as well!)! As my wife says, i'm better with numbers than she is (especially when it comes to my fishing budget ...)!

Hi Bilge boy - and others,

I agree with Poodroo. Everytime I buy a rod or reel, I have to buy two - one for the missus as well, so I've found the Penn combos fantastic value and for the price I reckon they are exceptional quality.

We have a couple of "prized" rods, but for week-in week-out boat rods - very good. we both have two Penn egg beater combos, and I recently bought 2x the Penn Gt 330's (overheads) combos and I don't think we've paid more than $150 for any of them.

Mate a good threadline for the placcie fishing that wont break the budget is the Shimano Sienna, match it up to a dropshot rod or similar and you have a top plastics outfit.

ps the last rod and reel I lost was in the Annan River at Cooktown. Was fishing landbased using live prawn, put the rod down to roll a smoke, saw it twitch and before I could grab it( it was only 12" away) the whole shebang( a penn spinfisher on a black queen rod) was heading towards the water at 100mph, last seen heading for Lizard Island.

Lesson learned I always keep my foot or something on any outfit that has to be put down if its not in a rod holder.

Man I was shaking, I bolted up to the car and grabbed a handline which I quickly baited up and deployed but as is the way, didn't get another hit that night- thats fishing!!!

Like the boys said it generally happens to everybody at least once so take it in your stride and enjoy the new outfit that you buy !!!

Re: One Keeper and Lost my New Rod

went fishin for sharks with a mate last year, and i was using a borrowed TLD25 with a full spool of 50Lb braid on a shimano backbone rod. my mate just baited up, and went to place the rod in my rod holder (corkskrew looking thing from Kmart), miss judged it and he flat out dropped it in the nerang river. i was horrified!!! he replaced it for my mate that i borrowed it off, and i went out the next day and bought my own.!! NEVER borrow gear

it happens, but i sure don't want it happenin again!!!

Same thing happened to Mr Sailfisher. Perfectly good rod holders in the tinnie, but he never used them. We were out fishing with him and I turned around just in time to see his favourite rod in mid air about 6 feet from the back of the boat. Guess who uses the holders now!
