    Re: Salmon

Nick, whereabouts are you located, mate?
When salmon are about it is often very hard not to catch them!
Certainly the gear you describe would do the job, tho' you might do better with a beach or rock set-up (12 - 15' rod, reel capable of holding 200 - 350 metres of 15 - 30lb line, depending on where you are fishing and what you are targetting) if you need to cast distances.
Lures and bait are all effective, pilchards, mullet slabs, worms and squid are fine, they aren't fussy eaters generally.
Don't waste live squid on salmon! Use them for mulloway, instead!
Generally schools of salmon are so large and distinctive you can see them easily on the beach, and if they are about (generally winter/spring) they will be easy to catch at night if you are into night fishing.
Good luck mate, they certainly go hard but not the greatest to eat, IMO.
    Cheers.

    Hi Nick,

Go the rod setup that you have listed, no problems there.

Try your line but be prepared to go a bit heavier on the trace - I've had 1 -2 kg blue salmon saw through 40lb mono trace inside a minute before today - their lips are like fine grain sandpaper

Re the bait, I've only ever landed these fish on mullet fillets but there will be more knowledgeable people here than me in this regard.

    Good luck!
    Regards,

    Andrew.
