    Stuffed Steering

Well after planning a 2 day reef trip all week(the weather is just about perfect),I got the boat launched around 4 this morning, started engine and ended up heading towards the rock wall. After some scrambling and fending off with an oar,I found I had no steering control.
Upon further investigation(and a lot of obscene language)I found that the metal sleeve at the alloy nut where the steering cable connects to the outboard had broken(very old and had rusted through).
As a result, when the wheel is turned all that happens is the cable comes out of its tube with no movement of the motor.

Do I need a new cable? or
Is it possible to remove the cable from the tube and replace this sleeve?
I dread the answer to this but am I going to have to pull the motor off the boat to fix this?

    Cheers Scott

Oh and before you ask, Kerry,I did a search.

Mate you need a new cable and depending on the transom you may not have to remove the motor. When you put the new one in use triple guard grease thought the tube of the motor and the nut , and put heeps on.

If its a old cable system (ie teleflex) you will ned to buy a new helm as well as the cable is different.

Dont wory it is easy to fit, as long as you dont need to remove the motor

    Good luck

Scott, I don't have the answers, but I feel for you missing out on the trip. I'm in Townsville and the weathers perfect, flat as a board.

I'm as frustrated as you, I have been waiting for my new larger tinny now for 7 weeks so it's hard watching these calm days go by.

    Shane and toymod,
Thanks guys,I Figured that I would need a new cable and helm.I will get cracking and remove the old one, find out the length and order new one tomorrow.
I was thinking of installing a NFB system.

    Evan ,
Mate, thanks for reminding me that its probably been the best weather weekend of the year .Yep.Absolutely Frustrated.
BTW,whats the go with the long wait for the tinny. Are you waiting to have it fitted out or something?

    cheers Scott

    Re: Stuffed Steering

    Scott,
The boat I ordered was not on the floor at the boat yard, so needed to come from the factory, estimated 6-8 weeks to delivery. Boat has now arrived......but motor not there yet. Ha oredered 40hp 2s Suzuki, just coming back into production, apparently ship bringing them from Japan broke down!!

I thought this sounded a bit of a wild excuse from the dealer so emailed suzuki and they confirmed the cargo ship had broke down. So should be in next couple of weeks.

Has been a hot, still day to spend in the shed!! But on the bright side, good days will still come around and the fish won't swim away!

    Good luck with your steering,
    Evan
