    Deep cycle cranking power

Will my deep cycle battery be enough to start my outboard if my marine battery goes flat?

Its pretty new, about 110 amp I think. Do they have the cranking power, or are they different from standard marine batteries?

I had trouble using the DC in such a fashion last week, after the main battery wore out trying to start the Tohatsu 40 in damp conditions. Lucky I also keep a jump pack which did the trick.

The DC is really for the minn kota, but Im just curious if they 'should' work as a backup. Maybe my connections werent tight enough.

    cheers

I have 2 deep cycle 75ah batteries and start the motor no probs (115hp). All the advice I had was that deep cycle will be no probs as a starting motor.

    Andrew,
depends on what type of deep cycle battery.
some are run only (used in allot of 4X4s for the fridge) and some are deep cycle crank.
obviously the crank deep cycle will do it with easy. ( same as in the jumper packs)
but the other will struggle to wind it over at all.

neil is right, there are 2 different types of deep cycle. I have a 120a/h and a 75a/h AGM deep cycle batteries, and both will start the 'lux if need be. There is a type of deep cycle that is specifically designed for slow disharge ONLY. They are a LOT heavier & a LOT more expensive. But they hold their charge a hell of a lot londer and are worth it if that is what you want.

If your deep cycle was the latter type you would know it. So it is most likely that yopur battery is more than equal to the task starting of starting the outboard.
