the eel that knotted itself may have been a knot eel as my old man once called one, dark brown in colour and once on board curled up into the tightest ball of eel ive ever seen, we just had to cut it off and throw the ball of freak fish back in.
pike eels are a bit of hassel but me n my mates hav loads of fun catching large ones (4-6 foot) in cabbage tree at night. we used to pull in a few in a couple of hours easy and realxing way to fish. grab a 6 pack n a cigar, throw a nice big bit of mullet in and wait for the zzzzzzzzzzz. and as rick k said not that bad eating but boney as nicole ritchie! when we ate them we skinned them then fried them in a mix of garlic butter n herbs, tatsed good but a bit of an effort to dodge the bones. they make better crab bait!!
It looks just like this one at amonline

They look pretty much like the one in vb4mes photo.
Most knot up, some dont, but they all look the same species.
Grants says a knot eel is a yellow mouth moray eel. My eels look nothing like a knot eel, yet they do the same thing? Now Im really confused.
Oh well, Im not gonna try to capture one for you all, Im just gonna keep cutting em off over the side of the boat.
I like my fingers as they are.
Andrew
Kingting got it right there they wont be pike eels if they knot up the line more likely to be a moray eel the pike eals are fair bit bigger and seem to lay straight when pulled in to a bank as long as u keep the tension on the line
Greg
Thanks Greg/Kingtin. Now I know they are knot ells of the moray type. They just arent yellow.
Do they make good shark bait?
Andrew
All eels make good shark bait (for some reason)..........I think it's 'cause they're oily. Unfortunately, these moray type eels are slimier than most so you have to be prepared for a messy business if you're gonna keep 'em. Strangely enough, despite their size, pike eels seem less slimy than other eels.

Here is the heavy duty version of an eel de-hooker.

Fished down at Tuthra for a week years ago and the shark fisherman off the jetty there used to catch monster eels in the freshwater, Cut them into foot long sections and cabletie the whole chopped up eel to a monster hook. Then they would put the baits in a dinghy, Shoot out a couple of hundred metres and spread them out. Some of the biggest landbased sharks I have ever seen.
Unbelievable how prolific the Pike eel is with so many people posting.
Cheers Dave.
