    Thumbs up Online Navigation course

Have you ever wanted to be able to plot a course using charts and compass alone?

Ever wondered what those parallel rules are for?

Ever wanted to calculate what depth of water will be at a certain spot at a certain stage of the tide?

All of these and more are covered in this quite comprehensive navigation course offered FREE by an English language, greek? website.

    See attached link: http://www.sailingissues.com/navcourse0.html

Warning! You may spend quite some time there.
Do like I did - save the pages for future reference.

I have to admit Navigation with out GPS, is a lot more fun, and rewarding.
Can be frustrating to start with, and is open to all sorts of calculation errors, but once your clear on all the details, and have done it for a few years, it's good fun.

Bang on Roughasguts. Navigation hardly changed from the days of Cook until radar came along then the Transit/GPS revolution of the late 70s saw an awful lot of knowledge thrown out.
If nothing else all boatowner shsould ave a basic knowledge in case the magic box has an unintended smoke release.

I have also found a similar, but not as exhaustive course provided by Qld dept. of Education. Some of the illustrations and examples seem a bit easier than the first course mentioned.

    For Sale: 1 GPS

Wanted: Charts, Sextant, Dividers, Parallel rulers, unwanted bottles of rum , wooden leg, parrot, 3-cornered hat etc.

Now I'm being a bit silly.

I did a coastal navigation course at TAFE college about 15 years AGO.

WENT FOR 2 NIGTHS A WEEK, 3 HOURS A NIGHT, 6 WEEKS. tHEN WE DID AN ALL DAY PRAC EXAM ON TEACHERS YACHT IN MORETON bAY. He was a retired marine pilot.

best course i ever did. If you lose GPS/radar and all the gizmos of today, most people would be buggered.

I say do it, you wont regret it.

    Mike
