Thread: Garmin GPS 126 equivalent?

    Garmin GPS 126 equivalent?

Seeking some help on GPS units.....

I have been looking at a basic GPS for my boat and like the Garmin GPS126 as it has the features I need, without the ones I do not need like a colour screen or maps.

Unfortunately this model is discontinued. The GPS72 seems to be a similar version, but in hand held format and I am concerned this will be too small a display to read. I have reading glasses, but can see a sounder OK.

Can anyone assist with some answers to the below?
    1) Is there an equivalent model coming from Garmin?
    2) Is there any stock around of the GPS126?
    3) Is there something similar in another brand? (although I do like the Garmin)

    Thanks

The Garmin 152 is the update to the 126. basically more pixels and the later software in a different package.

I do believe the 128 is still available, which is the same unit but different "antenne" one is built in one is seperate (not too sure which one is which)

The GPS126/128 might still be available from those places still with stock but both models have been discontinued. I am aware of one outlet still with these models and being quoted in BMT packages.

Unless one could get these discontinued units at a much reduced price (much reduced) then they are simply not worth it. The last software release for both these units was Aug 4, 2003.

Currently bidding for one on ebay, the 72 model. A mate has one, easy to use easy to read, he cant see for shit, and has no worries, It will be my first gps, and i find this one really easy to operate, seems to be a good entry level unit. There going on ebay for around $160! Ooops, but just wait anothe 24hrs or so ,so i can get mine.

not too sure why it would be "an entry level" GPS, it will tell you where you are, how to get to somewhere, has trackback plus most all features of the "better" units, so I guess if it is not really expensive/colour, it must be "entry level" so on that reasoning a 40HP outboard (say) is entry level??

    Re: Garmin GPS 126 equivalent?

Thanks all, I now have my unit and am happy, just waiting on a RAM mount and will be good to go. Next trip is Copeton at Easter, so will hopefully put it to good use.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but I understood there were no maps available to cover dams? Also, I would guess the changing water levels would greatly reduce the accuracy of any maps if they were available? This is the main reason why I did not want a mapping unit, as I fish dams 90% of the time. All I want is to mark some spots, save some trolling routes and have a path out of the sticks at night, at say Prossie for example.
