Guide "Scalem" shows "For Steve" around Wello

Scalem and For Steve's long awaiting fishing trip took place today. We had been planning todays meet and greet session for several weeks and the weather played along beautifully.

We met at the ramp at 4:45am and after introducing ourselves we were on the water and starting our first drift on Wello reef about 5am. The action has hot for the first three or four drifts with several double hookups and a couple of nice squire going into the esky.

The action slowed down around mid-morning but we still managed the occasional good hit and some smaller specimens. Scalem suggested we explore some ground around Green Island where he put me onto a quality squire on light soft plastic gear.

By the end of the session, we had 5 nice squire in the esky ranging 39cm to 44cm - good for a delicious feed. There was also enough hits and throwbacks to keep our interest until around midday when we called it a day.

Many thanks for Scalem for showing me countless tips to improve my soft plastic fishing. Being my first trip to Wello, Scalem very generously showed me the techniques and locations which proved very helpful.

A great day out on the water. We'll do it again soon.

    Cheers, Brad.

Sounds like you had a great day out with someone that knows how to fish with those plastic thingies.
That is one thing that never ceases to amaze me with this site.Someone is always willing to lend a hand and point you in the right direction.
JEEEEZ might have to take Scalem out for a trip in the Haines and learn a few of his secrets.

    Cheers Dazza

Thanks for the good wrap Brad, but you had everything so very nearly perfect, it was only needing a small amount of fine tuning, and whamo!! At first I had the head start, but I thought it only polite to allow the captain to catch the biggest fish of the day

Sorry for the late reply, we've been out for a BBQ, but here's our catch for the day. We are definitely on for another trip Brad, nothing surer!

We did go over to that location later in the morning Brent, best way to describe where was quite a number of yellow ( pro??) crab pots on the SE corner of Green, we were not much further than that. Brad got his best fish of the day there. Beaut sound that Brad, click click click.... zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZzzzz click click click.

I was looking for you guys, but get too consumed with my fishing and don't know what boats I am looking for. Why don't you paint them firetruck red like Webby's, you can at least see him from the other side of the bay!!

My all round favourite, and never to be on the water without, was the 4" gulp pumpkinseed curly tail grub. When you buy this in the salt water blue pack, Berkley call it the 4", but when you buy it in the freshwater red pack, they call it the 3". To me they look exactly the same size, but the saltwater grub seems a little more durable, but only by a negligible amount.

Brad was using similar, but in a dark green colour. He was also using a weird looking thing which, if I had to honest, I had thoughts of "you won't catch anything on that Brad" I'll let him explain, but I think he got them on a clearance table somewhere and paid nothing for them. It had a clear curly grub tail, with red head + these little finns on the side. The fish didn't mind it that's for sure!

The wierd plastic that attracted lots of attention was an Powerbait 4" minnow grub with a red head and a clear body and tail. I think they were old stock and I picked them up in a clearance sale for about $3. The colours reminded me of the big "Qantas" lures we used to troll around up north for Spaniards, Cobia etc. They seemed to do the trick.

Others that performed for me were Gulp 4" minnows in white, and 3" minnow grubs in watermelon.

    Cheers, Brad.

Good job boys.... havent visited that area of green before - always thought it looked quite fishy - may have to take the time. Good on you too Brian - if we keep up the conversion rate - there will be less smelly hands around the bay

    Hey Adam,

remember when we went out in your boat ( so many moons ago) and we were not familiar with wello leads in the dark, then turned left??? Your boat was a little faster than I thought, and we actually over shot wello until the sun gave us enough light to realize where we were. That spot we fished as the Sun rose was exactly s/e of green. So you have fished it, but just forgot ( it was dark at the time)

Mate, I think I should do better than that and organize a fish with yourself some time in the near future.... but you never seem short of willing boat crew. Food for thought. Brad is now sure to increase his PB by a quantum leap I am more than confident, all the right gear and technique - I think I would like to be there when he does. See what happens!
