I just bought a boat that had one of these units included but not fitted. I remember a mate buying one a number of years ago and it was expensive at the time. It souded very well but was limited re waypoints, etc. compared to the units you can purchase these days. Any thoughts on whether it is worth fitting to the boat or sending to the Commodore 64 graveyard.
I bought a boat a few years ago that had a seamax sounder/gps unit on it.
Mine was a pretty old sounder and I am sure that in its day it would have been pretty good.
I upgraded it after about a year as I found it didn't really have enough power to give good readings over about 60 metres. Also, I found the menus very frustrating to access.
The boat came with a seperate GPS unit so never used this option on the Seamax.
So, it depends where you want to use it. If just for bay/inshore use, it would be okay. If you intend fishing offshore, in deeper water, you will probably find a newer, more powerful sounder more suitable.
Thanks Grant. Maybe the previous owner shared your thoughts as it had never been fitted to the boat. The tinnie show isn't far off so I'll see if I can afford to do some shopping.
I had one and it was good except that it's smallest range was 25ft. As far as being user friendly they are definitely in another world. Don't use the GPS option it's poor by today's standards. I will say that after a software upgrade it was better that my fathers Furuno 668 and that's saying something.
I have the marinetek seamax but someone cut the plug off that goes into the back of the sounder from the GPS antenna. Iv bought the new plug which is an 8 pin. The wire from the antenna has 7 wires of differing colour . What I need to know is which wire goes to which number on the new plug ????
Anyone have any ideas for me to try pleazzzzzze :-)
