Can someone with experience with both navionics charts and the new nautic path stuff from lowrance please advise me of the comparison between the two particulaly in respect of detail.
Amazing Lowrance introduces a chart with double the coverage at half the price and gives them away with any purchase of an Eagle plotter or combo unit and no one has yet compared them to their direct competition. Well I ordered one, arrives next week, so I will provide some feedback myself just in case anyone else if wondering.
Hi, Just trying to remember ... I remember I did not like the Nautic Path because.....
1. Was only "allegedly" more accurate and
2. The depth contours were by colour and not black lines like with navionics.
The NP appears much simpler to to the eye and probably the beginner and Bias says not selling well ...hence give aways! and besides I DON'T LIKE CHANGE ...... I want to always find my spot and ALWAYS catch'a'da'fishes mate!
Cheers LOL
Hey Nep, have attached some screen shots from my Nautic Path chart and Globalmap 3500C. Previously had a C-Map NT+ with a Navman and I reckon the Nautic Path has better detail. Only downer is no green zones with the NP.
Mate, when I cross the depth contours the depth corresponds on my Furuno FCV-620 straight away, have yet to find a spot that the chart has not been acurate. Havn't run into any reefs yet, so I give them a thumbs up.
The best thing about it is the price, didn't cost me a cent
The Eagle units that I have fitted with the nautic path charts seem to be quite ok.
I havent had any customer complaints about them at all.
The Navionics, in my opinion, is an easier chart to interpret, as they use exactly the same colours as the paper charts, but I suppose it is what you get used to.
I will say that navionics has more detail available on the charts BUT I find that there are some markers around moreton bay that are missing.
If you are happy with the nautic path charts, then you wont get any benefit from upgrading - especially if you are working in a local area, not coastal cruising.
Manjilad, whilst I understand where you are coming from with the "dont fix it if aint broke thing", I am upgrading from a greyscale Cetrek plotter that came straight off the ark so there is going to be a big change whatever I go for. Given my lack of familiarity with any of the new plotter/chart systems i think I will go with the Eagle/NP based on the "good enough at the right price thing".
Ta much for the screen shots Leezor, detail looks fine to me and not many green zones in the N.T YET so no concern there. Although perhaps they will put the indigenous tidal area claim zones on there in the future .
Thanks again all for the feedback and I will let you know what I think when I have it up and running.
C-MAP MAX and NT have been rated the Best Marine Cartography for the last 6 years by the NMEA, National Marine Electronics Institute. NMEA is an industry organization and accepts no advertising so their findings are pretty non biased.
Alot has to do with your navigation needs. If you are always in familiar waters and are familiar with most navigational aids and you don't need alot of port information, and you don't have any tricky or complex navigation needs then Nauticpath will work fine for you.
If you travel to unfamiliar waters, use ports or marinas frequently, or if you have grounding concerns then you would want to consider going with C-MAP MAX. It has real dynamic navigational aids with correct flashing lights to match the actual marker. It has detailed port plans with aerial photos of the ports and marinas and a complete list of facilities at each port or marina as well as channel information to ports and marinas. C-MAP MAX also has Guardian Anti Grounding. If you are on a heading that will place you in shallow water that could potentially cause you to run aground it will display a red area on the chart to warn you of potential danger.
As for accuarcy, my experience has been that all of the major manufactures charts are pretty accurate. I have used Nauticpath, Bluechart, Navionics, and C-MAP. I currently use Navionics for freshwater and C-Map for saltwater. I have come in from the Gulf at night using only the gps and the C-MAP puts me right on every channel marker. Many of the channels are very tight so there is not much room for error and I have never had an error with the C-Map.
