Large diesel inboard
G'Day all,
Not sure if this has been put up before, but here is a link to a massive 2 stroke diesel built for container ships.
It gives an idea of the size of these things.
See link here: http://people.bath.ac.uk/ccsshb/12cyl/

This has been posted before, but no worries - this size of machine never stops to amaze.
Now, what size battery do you need to start this thing? The cold cranking Amps required is probably enough to light up a small city?

Wouldn't like to be the apprentice on that motor.
Son, get me the short 16 foot ratchet, and the 1.2 metre socket, Oh and the 1.3.
Love to see the tool box.

Check the torque figures and fuel consumptions. Serious mojo there.
Also a couple of the major container shipowners are looking at building mega-boxboats with 2 of these, side by side, powering them.
For the sake of interest they are started with compressed air from a 30 bar supply and they require an air plant sufficinet to give 14 starts in one hour.
A properly designed ship engine plant achieves a thermal efficiency approaching 55 to 60%, while our little donks are struggling to make 20 to 30%.
And did you notice the WOT revs?

awsome stuff. When I was an apprentice the fitter and turner was an ex engineer on ships. Apparantly some of these engines are double acting, meaning the have 2 heads per piston, one below the piston that the piston rod goes through. They were a bit smaller though, with'only' a 6 ft stroke and 3 ft bore
