Friend of mine is planning to fish the kimberleys for barra in May this year.
Quite a number of years ago I fished the Western end of the Gulf of Carpentaria in May and the water was getting pretty chilly so barra fishing resulted in plain zilch - ZERO.
Can anyone advise if May is a good time for barra in the Kimberley?
G'day Hook, I lived in the Kimberlies for 14 years and, yes, you can catch barra in may, but it can be tough work. Get your mate to fish the downside of Ivanhoe Crossing, out of Kununurra, using the small barred grunter (stripeys) or cherabun. Toss the bait/lure in the white water directly below the crossing. Be aware of the crocs!! The best lures are shallow divers, ie Reidy's B52. The Keep River, up in the salt section regularly produces metre plus barra; caught one at 1.17 m in June one year. Best bait there was the pop-eyed mullet and shallow diving lures. The Fitzroy was a bit more difficult due to the lack of accessible places, but mullet and shallow lures will work.
Just a small point but anyone who has spent plenty of time in the Kimberley calls it that - The Kimberley. Not plural. OK that aside the advice the boys have given you is very good. I spent 9 Years in Kununurra from 87- 96 and loved every minute. Ivanhoe will probably be clear running by then and a bit "cold" so may not be worth it, it also depends heavily on how many gates are open on the bottom dam as to water level at the crossing. The photo posted above would be well and truly unfishable, maybe 4 gates? 2 was the norm but it also depends how far they open them. One good place I like early in the dry season is the Pentecost River which is the first river on the Gibb River Road from the KNX (Kununurra) side, lots of livies at the crossing and pick yourself a spot on the bank. Lots of fish to be had and a nice safe swin at the crossing if you desire. Lots of local spots always and Bowser at Red Sun Tackle will help you out if in doubt. The earlier you can get there in May the better though as it gets harder the further into the cold months you get unless you go to the saltwater. Enjoy
Thanks for the advice Boris. I'm not sure at this point if he'll be heading to KNX or from Broome (by boat).
I myself passed through KNX in Sept 2001 on my way to Kimberley Coastal Camp. Didn't get to fish the Ord although I took a day tour of the river - was very tempting.
Will also certainly keep in mind the "singular" use of Kimberley. Never thought of it before but on reflection gotta say you're right. Thanks
