In search Of New Ground - What fish is this?

Poodroo and I decided to check out a spot away from the usual high traffic areas like Wello and Mud. We left Raby BAy and headed north, and it wasn't too long till the sounder was showing some very broken bottom from 5 Mtrs to 13 Mtrs.

Out go the Placcies, and we waited, keeping our eyes glued to the sounder. I gotta say, this sounder does not tell lies, because as soon as we saw a massive amount of something, was about the time the birds started diving for bait all around the boat. We could see larger fish shapes chopping through the bait school, but had no ideas what they were..... Until A fish decided to dance on top of the water like a hooked barra, but straight toward the boat!! It disappeared again, and for a few seconds we both had blank faces, what was that??? Then Poodroo's line started peeling off, ZZZZZzzzzzzzZZZZ but we knew the fight wasn't something either of us were prepared to call what fish he was hooked on to. Then it became obvious that the fish which had danced on top of the water a few moments ago, was the fish that Poodroo was now fighting to get to the boat. And what a fight!! A few times we thought he was going to lose it.

Have a look at the photo and someone please tell us what it is, and if it actually can be put on the dinner plate?? Poodroo will load his photo on site of the fish caught later, when he gets a chance to load it. But suffice to say, I caught one that was a little bigger, and if I was fishing alone, I was a goner for sure! Poodroo always warns me not to fish two rods at the same time, and I don't understand why??? This thing had gone under the boat, around the leg of the motor which could only be corrected by trimming the motor up. And we still got it in!!

What is this? I am just about to fillet it, the body looks quite fleshy.

Hi Scalem. It's a bit hard from those photos ,but it looks like a tarpon to me.They aren't that good to eat as they're full of bones.

Tarpon or Giant Herring, hard to tell by the photo's....either is a throw back due to the many and varied bones you will find.....

    Ahoy Scalem,
i think that the others are correct that they are Tarpon or giant Herring. I will also say that whilst at Mud this morning i saw a number of large fish break the water which did not appear to be Macks & at the time i thought they were "Tarpon".

Guys you are right!! Anyone know CPR for Giant Herring? About the same time Poodroo tried to fillet his at home, I was doing the same at my place. The flesh is MUSH and goopy - confirmed by poodroo's PM to me just now. I gave a little ball of it to my cats, and they looked like me, with a mouthful of sticky peanut butter Maybe good Mudcrab bait, so they won't go to waste ( the fish, not the cats!! ) but I won't be taking one home ever again. Good fun catching though.

I've never caught giant herring that big. The ones I have caught were a blast to catch, so I imagine you guys had some great fun. I wonder if they'd make a good troll bait for a spaniard.

Sorry guys but IMO If you don't know what it is then you really shouldn't take it home for a number of reasons

Agree with Greg......how did you know you werent breaking the law taking a fish home that you couldnt confirm ID?

also- giant herring are not tarpon. 2 completely different species.
