Thread: lack of power in 35 evinrude

Re: lack of power in 35 evinrude

    Neill,
I'm a bit hazy on the 35's but give this a try.
Your spark plug leads should go to two seperate ignition coils. You can test the coils by swapping over the orange (from memory) primary wires that come from the powerpack to the coils. If you swap the wires between coils and the other cylinder now has spark you know you are up for a few dollars and will have to test further to see if it is a powerpack, sensor unit or stator. If the same cylinder has no spark you are in luck and it is just a coil.

    Cheers,

hi mark. yes the wires are orange. i've just swaped them around as you sugested & it is now the other plug that is firing. swap back & oranganil plug fire's so this would sugest that both coil packs are working fine. is there any way i can check back ferther?
ps. no hamish the leeds are factory fitted (coil pack & leed 1 pice)
    cheers

sorry goldfish this is the time when without looking at it its all a guess.

you could try running a new wire (piggy back) to the dead coil to illiminate the wire. other than that thats me done.

    anytime goldfish.
only glad i can help and save someone from getting ripped off.
my father inlaw had something similar with his old outboard and was told to buy a new one. it would cost to much to fix (of course was shown their range). 20 bucks to rewire the old girl its as good as new.
wires can break and still look good.

Hmm, Most probably a power pack. Any further testing and you will need either a spare powerpack (maybe someone has the same motor and you can borrow theirs for a swap and test?) or you need a "peak volatge meter" to test the volatage output of the trigger and charge coils.

You may be able to test the trigger circuits with an ohms meter but it can be a bit hit and miss. As the internals on the powerpacks are filled with epoxy they are a throw away item. There used to be a place down in Melbourne that sold non-genuine powerpacks but I'm not sure if they are still in business or, for that matter how good those powerpacks are.

    Good Luck,

Siera, might have one there an after market outboard spares manufacturer.
Only problem there based in Canada, but they will post your order and be a damn side cheaper, than if you got there product here.
And strangely enough if you ordered on here from an outboard place bet you get there product anyway.

ok thanks guys. i will try and borrow one to test it for sure. (doese it have to be the same or ie merc, yammy. or 85 evinrude ect) ? then i will try and track one down through the way you both segested. or the wreckers.
once again thank you all very much you have been a great help.
