A Butterfish is what it is, average to eat but not as uncommon as you might think ...foxy
I think ive caught smaller ones in the cast net.Had a nasty litttle sting on them.

It's a spotted butterfish, also called a spotted scat. They are very common but are not commonly caught because they are largely vegetarian. They are closely related to the striped butterish which is a slightly more common catch and is also very common in SE Qld estuaries. I've caught large striped butterfish while fishing for luderick but only get the spotted variety in the cast net. The juveniles are almost black with some orange bands and are a popular aquarium fish. Recently while fishing the ledges on the inside of Bribie Island my anchor got stuck between a couple of large rocks. I put on a pair of goggles and jumped over the side to free it by hand. I was surprised to see the most abundant fish around the rocks were schools of spotted butterfish up to about the size of the one pictured. There were hundreds of them, but they never took a bait (live yabbies) whenever I've fished there.
