Thats hilarious.... I mean I feel sorry for the poor dugong... but now they want to fence off shipping channels??? The poor beast was hit by a ferry are we going to ban all water travel now???
These are interesting times!!

This from the WestEnder paper today
The Australian Marine Conservation Society is saddened today to hear that another dugong has died from boat strike in the Moreton Bay Marine Park.
The remains of a large, tagged, male dugong were discovered near Macleay Island, adjacent to Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay.
Craig Bohm, spokesperson for the Australian Marine Conservation Society, said “Dugongs are a threatened species and it is time we do more to secure their future – particularly in our marine parks.”
“We urgently need an independent scientific committee to set conservation targets for Moreton Bay Marine Park. These targets should help us protect dugongs as well as the seagrass meadows and other habitats they depend on for their survival,” Bohm continued.
“The Australian Marine Conservation Society also acknowledges the commercial ferry operator who reported the strike. This was a responsible act and one which demonstrates a commitment to be part of the solution,” Bohm said.
Dugongs are listed as vulnerable to extinction in Queensland by the Nature Conservation (wildlife) Regulation (1994) and internationally vulnerable to extinction by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) (2003).
“The Australian Marine Conservation Society understands that 16 dugongs die on average in Moreton Bay Marine Park each year. This is certainly unsustainable and for most Queenslanders unacceptable” Bohm said.
“During 2007, Moreton Bay Marine Park is under review by the Queensland Government. This is our chance to let the Queensland Government know that we want conservation targets set for the park to secure a better future for our dugongs and other precious wildlife,” Bohm concluded.Members of the public can obtain a copy of our Dugongs of Moreton Bay Fact Sheet by visiting www.marineconservation.org.au and following the links to Fact Sheets
Moreton Bay Needs Your Help
Moreton Bay Marine Park, located off the coast of Brisbane, is a beautiful tapestry of islands, beaches, coral and rocky reefs and seagrass beds. These habitats provide homes for a myriad of animals and plants including whales, dolphins, dugongs, sea birds, fish and crabs. Moreton Bay's wetlands are recognized internationally as RAMSAR sites for their importance to migratory shorebirds, and nowhere else in the world can such a wide variety of large marine animals be enjoyed on the doorstep of a major city.
Sadly Moreton Bay Marine Park is under threat. Every year 200 turtles and 16 dugongs are killed in the Park, 20% of its seagrass beds have been lost and over 50% of its salt marsh has vanished. With less than 1% of Moreton Bay Marine Park protected we have a long way to go if we want to save the future of this beautiful place.
Fortunately this year the Queensland Government will be undertaking a 10 year review of Moreton Bay Marine Park. This review gives us an exciting opportunity to increase the protection in Moreton Bay and thus help solve some of the problems the Park is facing.
Please help by contacting the office of the Queensland Minister for Environment - Lindy Nelson-Carr - and insisting that 20-50% of all critical habitats in Moreton Bay Marine Park are protected. Tell her you want high levels of protection for our marine life and you want scientists to set conservation targets to help us achieve this goal.
The QLD Government needs to hear from you. They need to hear that you care about the health of Moreton Bay Marine Park. Until now, the Minister has only heard from people who want to keep the level of protection at less than 1%. She needs to hear from those of us who care about our marine wildlife!
Send your letter to EandM@ministerial.qld.gov.au or call her office on (07) 4725 4166 and let them know you want Moreton Bay better protected.
If you are a SE QLD resident you can contact both the Environmental Minister and your Local Member of Parliament to raise your concerns (visit http://www.amcs.org.au/default2.asp?active_page_id=376 to find your local MP (if in QLD).
Your personalized letter and/or call make a big difference. If you have ever visited Moreton Bay Marine Park please include your experience and what you love about it.

In life, start off wrong and you'll finish wrong. Put just one skeleton in the closet and you'll have to put another one in to hide the first, and so it goes.
But start off right and you'll finish right. There's no comeback when you stick to the truth - and no skeletons!

nothing wrong with dugong mate
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent genius will not; un-rewarded genius is almost a proverb. Firstly my disclaimer, I am not affiliated with any political organisation in any way, shape or form. I am just some quiet bloke who lives northern bayside, hell I didn't even vote for 15 years until my wife dobbed me in.
I am very interested in conservation issues that affect my access to the bay and also affect the sustainability of the bay. I have seen the obvious bad blood in this news area between yourself, Shane, and the fishing party. I then read this response from Adam (supposedly a fishing party rep) to the dugong story and feel compelled to let you guys know that you are a pair of clowns. How can you ever expect the fishing party to get the respect of the general public when you guys publicly bicker and then laugh off a story on a dead dugong as being hilarious and then mention a ferry hit that's not even mentioned in the news article and then say that someone is proposing the fencing of channels.
Adam, I hope someone in your organisation (TFPQ if you are indeed a rep of their's as stated here) pulls your head in because you guys have lost my vote completely.
Again, I'm no greeny and I want access to the bay for myself and for my family for ever, but in saying that I don't want it destroyed either.
With responses like yours you can't be helping any of us retain access to the areas we love. I urge you to use your brain before flapping your lips because it's certainly not what the conservationists are all doing at the moment.
"The underlying spirit of angling is that the skill of the angler is pitted against the instinct and strength of the fish and the latter is entitled to an even chance for it's life."

Apathy is the enemy
TFPQ will lodge a properly researched, factual and carefully worded submission on the rezoning of Moreton Bay, as it did on the rezoning of Great Sandy Straights, the Great Barrier Reef review and the animal welfare bill.
Paddles point is well made.
Anyone wishing to view the type of submissions made can do so on the web site or email me personally for a copy. kc@whitsunday.net.au
Adam has been advised to chose his words more carefully but he does not speak on behalf of the party. Only the chair has that responsibility and authority.
KC
Geez!!!! Are some of you people spoiling for a fight or something???
OK... Let me apologise!! I deeply apologise that I have to spell out my thoughts and feelings in such detail because some people dont get where I am coming from!!
Ok Yes I confess I may have to choose my words a little more carefully and this may mean typing out a diatribe when only a few words will suffice.
I already mentioned that I felt sorry for the dugong... Heres the quote "then I said it AGAIN - Poor Beast... Thats not what I was laughing at! I was laughing at the attempt by the AMCS to make an issue of a poor (there I said it again) beast which had been hit by a ferry and YES Paddles... the story did mention the Ferry operator who duly report the incident at sea which he had to do as part of his duty... he hit the thing so as it was an incident at sea he had to report it - thats how the AMCS came to know about it - through the report logs - have another read of the article - go get the report logs and you will know the full story.I feel sorry for the poor dugong...
Is it possible that you missed anything else???“The Australian Marine Conservation Society also acknowledges the commercial ferry operator who reported the strike. This was a responsible act and one which demonstrates a commitment to be part of the solution,” Bohm said.
Anyway again - all beside the point... the real point I was trying to make is the self same one that Redspeckle was trying to make - i.e the AMCS are trying to ramp up closures to extractive activity by using the ruse of protecting dugong - even when this incident had nothing to do with extractive activity.
I apologise to all those who mistook my comments and challenge you to re read my comment again where in I mention the "poor" animal and how sorry I felt for it... twice. I value life highly and wont even kill a fish I wont eat (except for bait and even then I still value the life of each bait fish and only take as many as I can use that session). I think it's pretty rude that a couple of people here want to judge me when they dont even know me.... think someone owes me an apology!!
I have the feeling that some of you are still going to attack me - so let me spell it out once more... I love dugong - love seeing them in the bay when I fish and I go out of my way not to hurt them - I WAS NOT LAUGHING AT THE DUGONG!!! I was rolling my eyes at AMCS using this incident as a ruse to close down the bay - when the incident had nothing to do with extractive activity.
I used the wrong words - I said hilarious - when I was trying to be sarcastic - sorry if some of you dont get it - partially my fault - but go have a look in the mirror - some of the blame lies there - the person who jumped to the wrong conclusion.
Jeremy... NO!! thats is not an "official" response!! did it say TFPQ under it? No it didnt - it said Adam - any mistakes were mine and not TFPQ's so anyone who wants to blame the party for that - well we were never going to get your vote any way - so not going to sweat that!! I am also a member of some other organisations and also a student and teacher at Uni... you want to put them on your black list as well??? - please let me know I'll send you the list!!
Lighten up people!!
Diatribe ended!!
Adam
p.s hey Shane..... "whatever" You trying to make this personal??? Why?

Hi Greg... for the dumb and uninitiated (me) what and where is Peyton Place?
Oh and you dont have enough time to hear about all of Shane's exploits (and achievements) during his time as Chair... from what I hear in SEQ he IS TFPQ
No... really... he did a great job!! Just dont know why the snipes and barbs!
Get your point about all pulling in the same direction... sounds like the coalition
Adam
Look like Adam is not as old as Greg & I...Paytons place was the original good old USA soap!! I hate getting old
Adam has spelt out his position on the AMCS article. I can see where people misread his term hilareous, to mean the boatstrike where in fact he was talking about the AMCS beat-up.
It is no co-incidence that the Minister has announced the Moreton Bay review at the same time AMCS has pressed the "go button" on good old emotive "save the planet" stuff. They are very good at it, well organised, well funded and have the ear of a sympathetic press.
This is the same tactic used, and still being used on the reef. i.e the drought was killing the reef, global warming, overfishing and now the flood is killing the reef.
Expect to see more and more about what is "killing" moreton Bay......and the answer will be 30 to 50% green zones...............This is a war zone and expect a very dirty fight. Truth will never get in the way of a bloody good story and bad news always sells.
Anyone, regardless of membership or non membership of a political organisation should express their personal views...just like Hicksy during the last election.......officially however, responses from TFPQ are the responsibility of only the Chair., the rest is just debate
KC
bloody hell, I'm dripping wet from the spray.
could be a clash of personalities there. I'm buckling up for this one.
I personally think increase in traffic is a big cause for the 'BAY' issue. The large increase in boat sales understandably equates to larger volumes of boat traffic & lesser volumes of fish. Its evolution & unless its managed its going to stuff up. I'm abit 2wayed on this one - 1. We can sit back now & say it's 'all good'. 2. Our childrens children are going to say 'where's all the bloody fish' (& dugong). I just hope there's an amicable agreement.
I don't know, sometimes progress sucks.
Matt
Its true in all debates, that words must be chosen very carefully. I said a while ago, that 50% is what their aiming for. If fisherpeople are seen to be uncaring, and not looking out for the best interests for all marine creatures and laws, they will come down very hard on all of us. With out a doubt, morton bay is under the watchful eye of many groups with a range of interests in mind. But what ever there true motives are, the fishing community is at the bottom of the ladder concerning the degree of relevence to the big picture. It would be in the best interests for all fisherpeople to conduct themselves in a way to draw support from the political and conservation groups, and just like kc says, they are well funded and very well organised. To have this debate about an injured marine creature will not help the recreational fisherman not one bit. Infact, all it will do in there eyes, will be to simply to ignore us.
And it comes down to what I,ve been saying all along. Over population.

I would love to be around in the future..some radical green group will blame the great drought of 2007..people frantically installing water tanks which has then prevented all the stormwater from reaching the Bay in its natural cycle of flushing the estuaries etc...they will be labelled as environmental vandals...no different to some of the fanciful tales that green groups come out with now.
To all the green groups...hands off the Bay.

Mate as quoted above a hell of a lot. What about the stands at Tinnie N Tackle Show, Brisbane Boat Show, Fin Fish Meetings, 50+ Fishing Club Presentations all in my own time and at my own expense. Then there was the Election. Two weeks off work with no pay + the thousands of dollars i put in personally all to support The Fishing Party Queensland
This is not about me it is about making Sure the rec fisher gets the Representation that they need and if it means giving some one a kick to get them moving so be it we must keep the fire burning because if we don’t we will all lose.
