I would suggest that some tracks leading to the beach from the inland route will be available for the ' families ' to get to a campsite. But restricted 4wd access is for the beach only.

I can foresee there being a problem with thieves taking stuff from 4WDs parked at the end of the access tracks, while families are enjoying their 'picnics' some distance away.

Sorry jeremy, I meant to say that there would be ' 4wd ' tracks leading of the main road to a beach area. They couldn't make people carry all their camp gear in by hand ? could they ?

I am under the belief that they are currently constructing tracks to the beach, parking areas and camping areas. Once this is all completed, beach access will be shut down on Hook Point.

Firstly you have to ask the question? Do the Government really want 4WD"s on the island. Answer "No". Secondly when somebody tows a big Boat or Trailer over to the Island, what are we going to do when we get to the track. Pump our Tyres back up so we don"t "Rip them to Threads". That track is hidious. Also nobody camps there anyway, and what about the Dingoes?. As we know, all the Government want to do is deterr People from accessing the Island, unless your in some type of Tourist Bus. Where are the Governments Brains. "IN THERE BACKSIDE.

Inland track is in good condition. We sat on 60 to 70 kph. Slightly corrugated but could be a lot worse.

Spoke to the ranger. He has no idea on closure dates. He also couldn't inform me as to progress on carparks and campgrounds.

Plans for Eurong. Bar to be shut, leveled and to be replaced by units. Bar and nite club to be built into general store building. New camping ground to be put in west of current Eurong accom. No answers as to how this will effect camping in the dunes nearby.

GET THE REAL STORY!!

As you may be aware, the Minister for the Environment in Queensland, will announce in the very near future the closures of beach driving from the barge landing at Hook Point on Fraser Island for a distance of 18 kilometres, and stage two will take it to 25kilometres in total. You will be forced to use the old mining road.

This closure does not have the support of the Police or Rangers stationed on the Island, the Fraser Island World Heritage Area Community Advisory Committee or the residents.
In a report commissioned by the Government, GHD Transport Study, states on page 33 - “The Surf Beach is the only self maintaining environmentally sustainable traffic route”.

In the past six months there have been three serious accidents on this road, the last occurring on the 29th November, and this is before all vehicles are forced to use it.

One way to see this madness averted before someone is killed or injured is to get involved.
