I was told by an old guy once (who I had just watched haul in a 3kg tailor off the beach at Lennox Head in the middle of the day!) that he used a strip of Bream as bait.
He said that there were so many "pickers" around that all his other bait got stolen before the tailor had a chance. He said that the pickers generally left the bream alone, but that the Tailor loved it.
I tried it last night, and got an OK Tailor first throw .
May just be an old wives tail, but has always worked for me,
the tale states that, although they will eat almost anything, bream will not eat their own kind, so , if there are too many picker bream, catch one & use it for bait.
Mackeral and bream are very different in the flesh stakes, i for one have never heard of using fresh bream. But in theory why wouldnt it work? although i prefer using oily baits for tailor or good pillies (not servo shite).
Interesting there are lots of pickers when fishing for them, i have caught monster bream on mullet fillets while my mates fished for tailor.
we tried bream flesh the other night, every bait we put out (even livies) got chewed up by bream and pickers, put a slab of bream out and they wouldn't touch it. Unfortunately didn't get any hits on it, but atleast the pickers wouldn't touch it
I for one am definately going to give flesh baits, esp bonito, mullet and tailor a go this year on the annual pilgramage to Fraser.
This is just one of many threads I have read that exhalt the virtues of flesh strip baits over pillies. Also going to have a muck around with using stinger hooks in the guts of pillies to try and pick up some of the bream/tarwhine that hit them in the gut. Bloody hell, sounds like a busy time - hopefully be able to slip a couple of cleansing ales in there as well!
seamus -> if your wanting to try bonito, we've found it works great salted down, lasts longer obn the hook too, and bonus is you don't have to keep it cold when your camping.
Hmm never thought about using bream as bait and thats if I catch them. I havent tried targeting taylor yet but I have always wanted to so I might give it ago soon. When are the seasons for them? Last I heard it was in march during the mullet run???
H-L-S I think what he means buy the stinger hook is a small hook tied onto a short lenght of line from the eye of the orgnial hook.
I donk know if you will understand that, hopefully someone else can help you out there if you dont.
If you are using cut baits there are a lot more prolific and fast growing fish than bream that work better. If there are pickers about flick a 20gm raider they won't touch that, or just work your baits a bit quicker rather than letting it sit.
