    Re: 97 GQ Patrol

Get a 4.2 diesel and turbo it

18 l/100 k at 100kph when not towing and depending on what and how fast maybe 12 to 14 l/100

Go the non nissan turbo like a schwitzer (bigger than nissan) but keep the boost to around 7lbs. These older 4.2 l diesel motors and manual gearboxs were made strong enopugh for the tubo.

Also get an injector pump specialst to adjust the pump when the tubo goes on, keeps the smoke down and the motor sweet. Also use injector cleaner say every second tank of fuel.

I got an 89 bought it with 30000k and stuck the tubo on at 60 000 and still going very well tows the Vag fine 2.5 tonne They are rated to tow 2.8 tonne.

Tubo Dynamics kits are (were) very good value and complete from motor to end of tail pipe. Also stick an oil cooler on and a timer 1 3 or 5 min to cover all situations. Torque and power both increase by about 40% ie from 85 lazy Kw to about 135 and torque ditto

Good truck that steers well just make sure what you buy wasn't driven by somone who turns the steering wheel and wheels before they start moving,. Does them no good.

Good luck and enjoy the wagon lots of room to keep kids apart too.

    Cheers

Taipan, check if the flywheel mods have been done, it's a while since I looked into these cars and I bought the td4.2 GQ. From memory the 2.8 has the 2 piece flywheel and it is very expensive to fix when it goes.

I think the harmonic balancer is a trouble spot also.

The TD4.2 is one of the best engines ever built and to some degree has a cult following believe it or not, doubt the same exists for the 2.8, but I understand they are overall a fairly reliable engine.

    cheers fnq

    Re: 97 GQ Patrol

Thanks for the info fella's. I also sought advice from the Patrol forum. My mind has been made up and i now own a 97 GQ wagon 2.8 TD, with only 128thou on the clock. Took it up to Ollerra yesterday and i was very happy with how the small enginge performed. I went to the same spots that i went to when i had the 4.2 ute. Much much more comfortable with the coil..And my back is thanking me for that. The kids also had a ball

Just need to put a 3" lift on her and a few more mods and i'll be happy as larry
