Thread: Noosa River Jacks....again

    Re: Noosa River Jacks....again

I believe it all depends on so many different things. From my experience I have seen more jacks come form luring per hour fishing than with livebait, however, I have seen the biggest fish caught with livebait. I have done alot of livie fishing but much more lure fishing and to me the main difference is clear. A jack will take a well presented live bait over a lure in most cases but you can work an area much more thoroughly with lures and also you can be much more mobile without having to carry a bucket, net etc. Also if you can't catch decent bait or it takes an hour to do so I would have done 200 casts by then.

But I wouldn't have a clue whats going on in Noosa and I was more talking about jack fishing in general.

PS. There have been some times recently that I would kill for a live prawn. Last night I watched three 40cmish jacks belting prawns on the runout tide and could only manage a half hearted hit on a 2"minnow before they scattered.

Yeah youre right.I think it depends largely where you are.
There is no doubt the jacks in Noosa cop a hammering!.......I think the bigger Jacks in the system are more consistently caught on live baits and at night and far more are caught on livebaits.
The run between the lakes here does hold good numbers of jacks but it is VERY hard work catching them up there and the area is flogged hard.So many people go up there throwing lures for a zero alot of the time.Alot of these lure fishos know what they are doing to and are good fisho's.
The jacks in the system do seem smart and alot of the time the only way to catch them is a live biddy or whiting....oops Diver whiting that is.

Ok... I think we have got to the bottom of this now.

It is clear we all love fishing and the added bonus of catching one or two.

I don't catch every night, nor would i want to as that would make it a chore, not a sport.

Noosa is defo unique because of the tourist element and you would have to really like Victorians to go out in the tub during the day and fight the masses for a decent drift!! So we go at night and fish the way we do because it works here like that, at this time. When the conditions change, we'll adapt.

So, last night, Aussie_Stu and I took some of your advice and tried something different.

We took lures only and 2 canoes onto a boutique (Read 4 acre) gazzetted lake which adjoins my property, north of Noosa and fished until dark.

    Not a thing.

The place is stuffed with Bass and Barra, not to mention other Aussie gamefish.

Did we have a good time? You bet! Did I learn anything? You never stop when fishing. Will we be doing it again? Maybe tomorrow.

We will be back, that's for sure, because i want to catch fish, but more importantly, because I want to fish.

If any of the the above doubters want to come up one evening we will gladly show them a spot or two and swap a few tips.

The offer is always there as fishermen are not strangers, just friends yet to meet !!

I duno why people persist on killing jacks from the Noosa system or any other for that fact, there might be a few in there but they are pretty hard to catch, why make it harder for yourself and others? I know fisherman are entitled to do what they want if the catch is legal but Mangrove Jacks are one of the best fish to be caught in this part of QLD and there is much better eating fish to be caught.

    My 2¢

    Re: Noosa River Jacks....again

in my 2 cents, I have had several local reputable sources confirm the local jack popuilation is quite healthy.

But in saying that as time rolls on pressures make the fish more wary and cunning, hence people thinking the population is hard pressed, of these pressures I feel amatuer fishing pressure is the least of the worries, with man encroaching into natural habitats, netting pressures, natural and man caused erosion, natural weather patterns and increased boating and general river traffic with all these pressures it's no wonder the local fish are harder to catch, but why do we focus on the jacks?? We also have jews and threadies in the river, these two are a rarer catch than the jacks and yet we don't ostracize people for catching and killing 2-3 schoolies?

As phil mentioned we don't take fish everytime we fish, yet a lot of hours xcan go into each of our fish, we take a few decent ones for the dinner table when we get them, yet don't go crazy on em either, we don't go out to fill a freezer like some others do. Fish needs to be eaten fresh, not frozen, and if you dislike us taking one or two every couple o weeks for food, well that's your call, but I would rather catch a few myself than buy from the fish shop round here, that way I know what I'm eating is fresh and actually what it is.

    MY 2c
Aussie stu- Unfortunatly people build up a repore with certain fish and decide that they are more important than any others. I do this myself and get crusty when people don't respect that. From having a jack in my fishtank I realise they are different from other fish and will never kill one again.

mjc85- To me river jacks aren't worth as much as reef jacks (breeders) and if you wanna give someone stick about keeping jacks then rip into anyone who posts a pic of a dead breeder. Everyone keeps harping on about keeping breeder flathead but no-one says anything when there is a big reef jack kept.

    Pete.
