Hi All,
I have been looking at a small threadline for light braid and have checked out a few of the mid range ($120 to $180) reels but was very impressed with the Penn Affinity. It has 8 or 9 bearings, waterproof drag and runs as smooth as silk. It is replacing my old Daiwa Regal Z 1500 which has given me years of good service.
Anyone out there with comments.
Tim
I bought the 4000 size for general fishing and found it to be a good reel. I also have a TD Sol and cant see that its three times the price better than the Penn. Only two drawbacks are it's weight and it doesn't lay the line as well as the Daiwa, but neither seem to effect the way the reel works. Also the Affinity's aren't made by Penn they are made by Ryobi and go under the name of a Ryobi Zauber which you can pick up on the net for about $80 - $100 dollars.
Hey Tim,
We were looking at the Penn a few months back. The boss was really keen on them. But decided to go with a Shimino Symeter instead, it felt a lot smoother than the penn. Not sure how the drags compare though?? The other half is the expert in that dept. We have symeters in 750, 1500, 2500 and 4000. They are great reel, we are really happy with them. I think they are roughly the same price. Have seen symeters from $115 to$139.
Cheers Kim.
Hi Kim,
I have just bought the Penn for $139 less 10% discount, so around $125. The reason I went for the Penn not a Symetre, my other choice, was the water proof drag, stainless steel handle as against a cast one, 5 year warranty and I felt it was smoother. I reckon both would be good choices.

g,day tim
you won't be dissapointed with the 1000 i have 2 of em and they get a floggin and are still as good as the first cast , i spray a little of the penn reel cleaner on a rag and give em a wipe over after use in the salt and it keeps em gleaming and it also serves as an inhibitor and keeps ya rod looking tops all the time as well .
i have a 4000 affinity as well and it has counted for some great fish as well, like this solid mack truck that went 4.25 kilo and a few nice snappery things.
cheers swano
I bought the first 4000 to land in Cairns when they first came out, it's a great little reel, I notice above they are now cheaper than the price I paid. It has handled some unexpected catches here around cairns with no ill effects including a 5-6 foot shark of the beach for 10 minutes till the line broke.
