Tried all the usual spots in Cabbage tree and Nundah Creeks this morning to see if any prawns were on the move after the rain. Nothing spectacular but a few prawns in most locations, mostly small bananas. Managed about 3 kilos but had to work for them. At least it's a start - they should improve over the next couple of months.

Nice catch Freeeedom ,its the same story at the pine ,I went out yesterday(friday arvo) was out for 3 hours and only got 2kg as you said they have to be worked for,but at least its a start.

What type cast net you using?

It's a big old one I've had for about 10 years. Getting very secondhand now with many rips tied up with nylon. Ten foot drop, top and bottom pockets and about 5 kilos of lead around the bottom. A bit hard for me to throw but gets to the bottom quickly which is important in deep or running water. Has paid for itself many times over, but might have to be retired soon.

Hey FREEEEDOM just a question for you.
Is there any particular spot that you look for when you throw for prawns
like small creek mouths or just anywhere along the banks?
Or do you see them jumping on the surface.

The simplest way to put it is that the prawns are where you find them. You have to put in the time and throw at lots of places and hope you hit a school. Often this will be where other guys are also casting, but sometimes you'll be the first there. Often the prawns are found in the deeper holes which are often on the corners or bends in the creeks so they are good places to try. The hole just above the freeway bridges in the Pine is over 10 metres deep and is a popular place for both amateurs and the river trawlers - make sure the rope on your cast net is long enough to reach the bottom. For the next few months expect to see a few boats there every morning. When there are lots of prawns around (which there's not yet) you will see a few jumping on the edges of the creek where your wash hits the mud. That's the time to start exploring that section to try to find a concentrated patch. Personally I like to start at dawn and work for an hour or so before it gets too hot and bright, but you can find them at any time of the day. I've never prawned at night so I can't comment on that - anyone else regularly prawn at night?
